I can see the price coming down once AMD counters it.

AMD is lucky if they catch up with the i7 920. It will be over a year before AMD matches the 980X performance wise, if even that soon.

Intel needs stiffer competition so prices go down.

All EE Editions were atleast $999 as far as I can remember.

Not as far as I can tell in the USA. I have seen preorders for $1083 which implies $999 is the target.

Winrar is limited by hard drive performance more than anything else.

Just making sure. I wasn't sure if Intel was just going to dub this chip as "Extreme" due to the 6 cores. Honestly, I can see myself getting this CPU.

No, these are for x58 mobos with 1366 socket, the new 6 core chips need tripple channel memory to run, there are no immediate plans to have the 6 core chips on 1156.

They won't. In order for AMD to compete, they would first have to get a hexa-core processor on the 32nm fab or lower in order to get temps down. Then they'd have to get its clockspeed to close to 4 GHz. AMD's K10 can't handle that on a single, dual, tri, nor quad core so the chances of that happening are none. Even then, it would barely be keeping up to the 980X. They'd either need an octo-core on the 22nm process or a completely different architecture.

I can see 3 really good things about this progression to 6-core chips using existing x58:
> All the 920 owners get a real upgrade path for when the 920 finally becomes old hat.
> People who buy this chip will get good resale value because of the above, when they move onto the next top-of-the-line chip in another 18 months.
> People at the bottom of the market will get an abundance of "slow" 920s to buy second hand for cheap.

If that all happens x58 will turn out to have been pretty good for us. Hope it does!

i can see lots of people selling lots of parts to get that chip, it's gonna make some great benching runs and have a monster life cycle, damn the first 920 co that i got when they came out is still king of the hill, so now this is just WAK.....

AMD countering in price is merely an excuse for being unable to compete in performance.

Ya there are rumors out that there will be mainstream versions of Intel's 6 core CPU's.

These rumors are more likely true, just look back in 2006, Intel released there first quad core(QX6700) and after that a slew of mainstream quad cores saw a release. It's a trend really.

That's kinda what happened with me. There is a bonus to it tho. You tend to stick with the rig longer, and just change the peripherals, or the occasional vid card or ram swap. You rarely keep searching for the "perfect clocker" when it comes to your cpu, so you can focus on the other stuff.
