HKEPC has info about upcoming price cuts on Intel's CPUs:

One can only wonder what would make Intel cut prices so much, especially on their high end models! This move will truly bring quad-core to the masses. Is Intel scared of what AMD has in store?

Those prices really are impressive. AMD is going to have a lot of trouble if it wants to continue competing - I read an article the other day explaining how finances are becoming a real issue as it tries to keep up with Intel's developments into the next generation.

I hope that AMD has a decent response to C2D just for the sake of competition if nothing else.

Edit: just a shame Europe gets higher prices and big taxes - it could stay just out of reach for a lot of people working to inflexible budgets. Oh well, my next PC will be a laptop anyway.

The prices seem low even if they want to remain price competitive. They should know by now that the Intel branding alone is enough to sway a lot of people to pay what ever they charge.
But if Intel is dropping the pentium 4 and pentium D lines it makes sense that they would want their replacements to fall under similar price points.

$266 for the Q6600 just doesnt sound right though, newegg is charging over $800 for the Q6600 now and $970 for the QX6700, dropping to 530/266 is a HUGE drop to do in a single step. It would make sense to drop the chips $200 a quarter rather than a single large drop.

Production quality must be up at intel, or at least numbers are surpassing demand. After all the E5310 (xeon quad core 1.6ghz) can be found for $300+ online already.

Thats almost unbelievably cheap, I guess they have been very successful at 65nm for production and dont have many bad chips, or this could all be a bit of extra to choke out amd a little more, or it could be that amd is about to release a much superior chip and intel wants you to buy up its chips first.

Can that picture suck any more? At least it's readable in the orginal page. But when is this price cut coming? Is this the same one that will bring E4300 to 133$?

    Here's a clear picture I just made:

This is great news. If this is true, ir looks like quad core is going into my next system. I gotta say tho, I'm a little skeptical of these prices.

maybe they know 45nm chips kick ass so they just want rid of the 65nm stuff before 45nm comes out, maybe they know no one will buy the 65nm stuff once 45nm is available.

imma gonna have me a quad tho' for that price.yeeeeeee haaaaaaaaaaaw

Thank you OnBoard, finally somebody who knows that JPEG isn't meant for Text...
I was about to do it myself when I saw your post. Easily readable and over 5 times smaller. :)

So much for my plans to get a E4300 for around 100 bucks at the next pricedrop on the 22nd April... Guess I'll wait for ~300$ Quadcore ;)

    Edit: I just noticed:

I just have to wonder what the cause is, but certainly I have a few theories...(in no order)
    1) Barcelona is so fantastic intel wants to flood the market now so no one wants news cpus for six months
    2) Intel wants to issue the kiss of death to amd, 266 for the e6850 that beats the x6800 only like eight months after release, it doesn't make sense for profits. I don't think anyone would pay 700 just to have an unlocked cpu. Intel may be cutting cpus to basically cost for awhile just to slaughter amd.
3)least likely is that intel has something new and better and wants to clear stock
The only thing I can say is that the future of amd is riding on barcelona, they've thrown a lot of money at it, and if it can't beat the q6600 by a wide margin, there is no way they can charge a large price premium. Without a large pricetag, amd won't be making enough of a profit to save their future. Certainly this is fantastic for right now, but amd dropping out of the industry is probably the worst thing that could happen to the cpu market, on the other hand, who cares about the future...I'm getting a quad core!

There is no wya they will actually be sold for those prices. THose are bulk prices and Newegg and all the other stores wil gouge the crap out of us. We'll not see sub $400 Quad prices for a long time I dare predict. And don't forget, AMD cares more about the future CPU/GPU concept more than beating Intel right now.

But those are "OMFGWTF" type of prices. 266$ for a quad is going to make intel a long time king in the proccie market, and poor amd will suffer the customers lack! LOL. This calls for more powerful games :D.
Btw, any has Flight Simulator X here ? How much does it need to run smoothly ? I heard too many things that it brings any system to it's knees when cranked upto full setting and high resolutions. Is it true ?

Runs great on a companies computers I do tech support for, bunch of alienware FX57s I believe... Not sure what else is in those machine, they tend not to have too many issues yet, its his older P3's and register systems I'm fixing all the time.

PS- It's a flight simulation company, that does the next step below a military flight simulator. And they have run Flight Sim X on it.

Penryn is just going to be a smaller die with more overclocking headroom no? (Im sure its default clocks will be higher too).

I think I´ll be happy with a quadcore conroe, 4 gigs of ram and 2 dvd burners. :)
