i would set static ip addresses for all systems in the network and dissable dhcp.. (but thats something i do as a default straight off the bat any way) really is mostlikely a media setting in the router/modem though. most now have media file preference settings where they will always favour media over anything els so you stream stuff better. could well be working when your uploading too.

Thing is, i have no way of messing around with the modem, its locked out by the cable company.

you could try going to something like 192.168.100.1 or something like that and it's either admin/admin or admin/[first six or last six of the mac address printed on the bottom] or whatever. sometimes the login is the phone number of the account and the password is the first or last six of the mac address on the bottom.
