Right now I am looking into buying a brand new system for myself and I DO NOT want to go the Conroe route. I am sticking with AMD, pure and simple.

The problem I have is I know I will be upgrading now and then but I find the DDR2 memory ridiculously expensive for even 1GB of PC2 6400 with decent timings. So which of these should I go with:

    939 Venice 3800+
    2GB 2-3-2-5 1T 400Mhz memory
Perhaps upgrade to X2 when programs begin using it more and prices come down
Skip the current-gen AM2 platform and upgrade with the next gen (2007 or whatever it will be)
    Cheaper price and refined mobo.

    or

    AM2 Orleans 3800+
2GB 5-5-5-12 2T 800Mhz memory (triple the price and not running at 1T)
Perhaps upgrade to X2 when programs begin using it more and prices come down
Pray that AMD doesn't come out with a Conroe-beater before I want to upgrade.
More expensive and first gen mobo.

    I need your advice guys!!!

You can click in my signature wher eyou see the memory (Kingston KVR 2GB) for a thread on my memory and vote! I'v EXTRA satisfied about the deal I got for my memory (200$) and it performs like DDR2 800 except I have better latencies and better write / copy bandwidth (double compared to DDR2).

Go with socket 939. No question unless you're into all the crazy tweaks that you can do with Nforce 590 SLI. You MIGHT want to wait until July, that's when X2 prices will drop massively. And believe me, when Vista comes out, you will want that dual core.

Go 939, that's what I did. I got my system(bottom) on wednesday. Really good, running well. Even though it's only a 3200+, it beats my Pentium D 820 at games, which is mostly what I do. I'd go with Zek though, wait until the end of July, that's when the dual-cores go down in price. The X2 3800+ will be $170 I believe, and possibly lower from places like newegg.

AM2 imo is worth it if you plan on buying a new cpu in under 12 months, when the 65nm stuff comes out... its worth it for a future upgrade path

im waiting for stuff to use ddr3 b4 i buy anything new... maybe a x2 if those drop 50% in price

I do not plan on buying a new CPU in under 12 months. Thus, is it better to go with 939?

Also, which core? Venice or the more expensive 3700+ San Diego?

San Diego is dropping price massively. Ultimately I would go X2 3800+ thoe. It's a personnal choice. Venice to me is fine but for little more cash I prefer San Diego. And Venice is expiring from AMD factory in couple days...

But the Venice 3800+ outperforms the San Diego 3700+ in pretty much every test I've seen. Here in Canada the San Diego is priced $100+ more than the Venice.

Venice then. It's a great processor. I've mine @ 240mhz HT default voltage, my GeIL Ultra is at 2-3-3-6, 240mhz, 2.6v. if the Venice is $100 less, then go for it. The X2 3800+ is 2 3000+ put together.

SanDiegos arent anymore expensive now: you can get a venice 3800+ for 124€ and for 20€ more a 4000+ SanDiego. I went for SanDiego, because the can be clocked higher.

yeah san diegos are the same chip in the fx single core series so you can get better clocks... ive seen many san's go over 3.0 while ive seen many less venices go that far

The 3700 is a waste of money. On July 24 the X2 3800 will drop to $169.

    Agreed, 110%...

    :)

    * If I were to buy today, for instance? I'd go "AM2" chipset based, just for the potential upgrade/update path CPU-wise...
