Im currently running on Corsair XMS3 1600MHz 6GB kit, 3x2 gb sticks,

im a member on steam and happen to notice it recommends 8Gb for Total war rome 2 game, And Arma 3 seems to run better when I set the launch options to allow it to use all my ram, so I believe games are starting to need more than 4-6gb RAM,

so I was looking at getting identical RAM but 3x 4GB sticks so it would make a total of 18gb and future proof it until the intel skylake architecture is out, around 2015 I believe
I do convert videos on a regular basis so the extra ram would benefit me all round.

I would go for it. 8gb is about the minimum for a high end PC these days. The more ram you have the more the windows prefetch can do its thing and buffer the hard drive so everything launches faster.

dont see why 8gb is necessary.

i dont think video encoding takes up a lot of ram.

but yes if you feel the pinch in gaming, its worth getting another stick.

if you can tripple channel in one go. also 3x4 is 12 :p

If your specs are correct, your mobo will support up to 24GB RAM.
If you are still running Vista Home basic 64 it will not support more than 8GB.

Upgrade the OS and fill the mobo to 24GB.
Depending upon what sort of video work you are doing it could make a huge difference.

yeah, specs are the same.

another frightening thing is that I think tri-channel memory is getting discontinued so i'll have to move sooner rather than later.

so if anyone else is thinking of upgrading, get it done now!!!

I wouldn't worry about that. Three single stick with the same specs will work

Sure, they do, but kits are guaranteed to have all the sticks have close timings and actually have the same parts. I bought 2 G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3-2133 kits like 2 months apart (same exact model number) and the newer set was rated for 1.5-1.6v and had green PCBs when my original set had black PCBs and was rated for 1.5v. I also bought some individual PNY DDR2-800 sticks (3 of the 4 sticks ended up blowing up after 1-4 weeks) and half of them had completely different, smaller DDR2 chips.

RAM prices are high right now, but I am not sure if the prices are going up or down. Might want to check out the trend. The 16GB kit I have now was bought for $84 September 2012, now that same kit is $125. Almost 50% more expensive

This is true, 8GB is starting at around £40 for a cheap set and £50+ for anything half decent, mind you 2000mhz+ kits are now a lot cheaper, I bought 8GB set of Gskill 2133mhz for £55 so even though prices are higher you can get higher rated sticks for around the same price which is still value in my eyes.

I just bought 2 8gb kits so got 4 x 4gb, am using three of them and have a backup in case one dies, I think you will find that is a cheaper option in most cases, tri channel kits seem over inflated at the moment.
