Yesterday I picked up a clearance item. A laptop hard drive.

    Seagate.
    60 GB. 4200 RPM. PATA.

    Price $28.

Also picked a MSI enclosure to go along with it for $10.

I just will be using this for data storage and moving purposes.

I haven't got a chance to put together.

Is it worth to put together or should I go for the 5200 or higher RPM? Is it worth the price difference?

    Suggestions please.

I dont think the speed will effect data transfer that much m8

That was a good deal btw, you will now have a portable external HDD ;)

its fine, the 5200 isnt going to make that much of a diference, if any at all.

plus, either way its still going through USB.

Is the enclosure USB 1.0 or 2.0?

As long as you're not in a rush, the drive you bought should do fine.

I'm afraid the speed difference really DOES make a difference. However I have a 4100rpm model among my "collection" and it runs alright. However it is noticeably slower at loading applications than my 5400rpm laptop models. I you would like I can get some HD tach readings?

I am not in a hurry. But just saw this last piece at the store. hmm why not try it. Yes the USB enclosure is USB 2.0.

I have 1 200 GB PATA and 1 160 GB SATA drives in external enclosures. But those are 3.5". Need to carry all the wires (power and USB) if I need to transfer files between computers in my home (tried thru network and it sucks because it is wireless). Hence this idea.:D
