just need somebody to make a card thats made for tweakers thats got a VR built in, put glue on it locked at stock if the colored glue drops broken then the cards been moded ;)

or just allow SOFTMODS!!!!

Is there not a Gigabytre 8800GT card that has a variable "switch" on the PCB that actually allows you to raise the voltage? I am sure that I read that somewhere which if true suggests that they hardware modified the reference design to allow voltage overclocking prior to it's distribution.

just make a bootable USB flash drive then stick all the files you need on that, thats how i flash on here :)

if you cant boot from USB for some reason, CD works just as well. you just need two disks.

might try outthe free disk tomb raider anyone played it yet?
oh and ill try bioshock and see how that is

Take a look here:

http://www.bootdisk.com/pendrive.htm

You need to ensure you have the latest version of Nibitor to dump and edit your existing BIOS plus NVFlash to flash the BIOS from your boot disk, lastly you need the correct command line to flash it, once you are at that point, drop me a line and I will describe how to mod your bios and give you the command line you need to flash the card, it's actually pretty simple, this is a general guide from this site on flashing but will help:

No, 1GB isn't a waste of money on high res gaming with games such as Crysis. Crysis easily uses more than 512MB of vram. And the bus width isn't gonna effect how much ram it can use.

I say get the Palit card. I love mine so far. Mine loads to about 60C OCed. If it's the Palit I'm thinking of, it also has 3 phase power, which is better than the reference design. Do you have a link to the exact cards you're looking at?

There are numerous tests showing zero performance increase in the 1gb 8800GT over the 512mb 8800GT... I personally even question that the 256bit memory bus will support 1gb of video ram...

Remember also that there is a possibility to see an improvement in a larger scale in the case your system ram lacks, they showed the same thing in 128bit cards from 256-512mb, but even then the performance increase was less then 5%.

You are correct, this thread confirms that, however, once you overclock the GPU to 700mhz and beyond there is noticeable difference so my angle on it is......if you dont overclock then little point unless there is minimum premium to be paid between the 2 cards, however, if you are an overclocker then there are gains to be made.

To support this statement, in Crysis, at 16xx x 10xx at max everything, AA 4x enabled there is only 1fps difference (average FPS, more in max FPS) betweeen my 8800GT (@770 core) and my 8800GTS 512MB (@ 810 core), yes at those quality settings I cannot honestly say the game is particularily smooth, but just playable, the point though being that in benches and reviews, that include the 512MB 8800GT and the 512MB GTS the GTS should be 5-8fps in front.

I opened up my PC and took that card out. After a close examination, I haven't seen anything similar to a "switch" or a potenciometer (google translator: I meant a variable resistor), that was what I expected to found, something similar in shape, if anything. There's definately anything similar to a real switch in my card. But I'm not an expert in microelectronics, apart of the different electronics I learnt on Telecomunication Engineering which was a lot less hardware and much more programming than what I expected. There's also the fact that all of the components of this card are "special" components that I am not used to see: solid capacitors, ferrite cores, etc.

No luck for me. There are another 2 different models of 8800GT in Gigabyte's site. The reference card (reference cooler) and a revision of mine with different cooling, could be that. :(

According to all reviews that I have seen, at those high settings the 8800 GT runs at 18 fps while the GTS runs around 19. My card runs it at 19-20 fps at those settings, so they're coherent to me.
At such high settings ROPs are what most matters and GT and GTS have the same amount. If I had to choose between pixel fillrate and memory amount to explain your results, I choose pixel fillrate without a doubt. Take into acount this too:

810/770 = 1,052
21/20 = 1,05
25/24 = 1,041
30/29 = 1,035

What I'm trying to say with those numbers is that you can explain your results with core clock difference alone.

Hmmmm, at those settings I am averaging 27 and 28fps....are those figures max or averages? I dont know therefore if thats down to the quad @ 3.6gig or what?

sorry man this is way over my head i would call myself an experienced windows user coz i been using windows since windows 95 but i hate text based and command based OS and DOS well when ever i had to play a dos game it gave me headaches

i tried to use a flash drive linux but for some reason you had to get files and do all this shit it just seemed complicated then again it was prolly to get you to buy there pre made pre loaded linux

i need to know how to get a cd r working instead of a flash drive as i dont have a flash drive handy and some of the methods for a flash drive actually require a floppy to get working
its not that my motherboard cant boot from a flash drive or cd its just that i dont know what to do i know what to set the bios to in the motherboard but just what do i have to put on a disk or flash drive to get dos working then in dos what the hell do i have to do to flash the bios

i figured you have to use dos to get the flash program to run

once its been done before its easy if some one showed me i would understand better

btw my current mobo has an windows based auto bios updater so no worries there

Could be. I think most of them use E6850. Oh and are averages at stock clocks, forgot to say that. Maybe is the memory. Definately your OC helps. But to discard graphics OC, let's do some math:
770/600 = 1.283
18 x 1.283 = 23.1
810/650 = 1.246
1.246 x 19 = 23.6
Graphic OC doesn't account for all the difference then. They were run on Vista. This can definately explain everything if you run it on XP.

Did you tweaked the game anyway? I lied (kinda) when I said that on those settings I have 20 fps. I tweaked the cvars and now I have Very High WinXP running at 30 fps with those settings, but I play on 1280x so it's even smoother. Erm since I changed the cvars I didn't actually lie. :D But I ran many benchies before the tweaking, to know how much could I squeeze out of it and it was a fair amount: from 20 to 30. Before I did that, I was a big defender of Crysis optimization and Crytek, now I'm in love with the engine, but I think they were a bit lazy on Crytek. :D

no worries, just go Here and download the file, extract it and use the usb formater to format and make ur flashdrive bootable, when it asks for the folder for the boot files its the same folder the formater itself is in :)

i had him upload that for yall since i couldnt upload it here and have been to fing lazy to make an account there yet(we met on baka-wolf anime forums, he stole my siggy pic to!!!!....oh well i stole it from somebody else first so i guess i cant complain :p)

I have to say I am enjoying the great amount of knowledge from these threads, I understand the whole concept of bios modding on my Palit 8800gt +1g but doesn't Riva Tuner do everything except raise gpu voltage??

I have to say I am enjoying the great amount of knowledge from these threads, I understand the whole concept of bios modding on my Palit 8800gt +1g but doesn't Riva Tuner do everything except raise gpu voltage??

Yup, if you ask it nicely to :D

True, the Palit cooler makes a big difference tho. About 15-20c. Nothing a additional gpu cooler won't handle either way. I get about 11275 stock on 3dmark06, 12025 with some tweaking the ram doesn't like to be overclocked.

same. I'm running passive and get 30C at idle. load never breaks 60C. Accelero S1 coolers completely own Nvidias stock cooling.

memory timings

Tatty_one, I was wondering about the memory timings on the palit 8800gt 1g, it doesn't oc very well is it true that loosing up the timings will make it OC better? If so any ideas on timings. I am familar with the bios mod all I got out of it was extra voltage tho. I would love to push the mem a bit.
