John Romero discusses Upcoming "MMO-ish" PC FPS

John Romero, who was a former Software Designer at ID and is currently the CEO of Loot Drop, has dropped some fairly succulent hints about his upcoming FPS game.

"Yes, I'm definitely going to be making another shooter and it will be on PC first. I'm a PC mouse and keyboard type player," he explained.

"I don't want to talk about the details but I already know what it is. I've already kind of designed the thing and it's pretty cool - though of course, I am going to say that. I think it's a neat design, I haven't seen the design anywhere else."

Groovy.

Classic FPS PC players will feel orgasmic, I'm sure.

He was more than a "software designer at ID," he was one of the four co-founders of ID. Romero was literally the founder in that he drew all four together to eventually form ID.

...that said, I'm not going to hold my breath for it. If it is great, fantastic; if it is not, oh well.

The man hasn't done anything big since he was part of iD, I hate to say it.

True, he created a lot of game developers but virtually all of them are now defunct or merged into something else. No product his name is tied to has been wildly successful.

Actually, without John Romero, there would be no original Deus Ex. Yes, Warren Spector and the team made it but it was because they worked for Ion Storm which was established by John Romero.
And the Anachronox wasn't bad from what i heard. I also wouldn't mind proper Daikatana 2. The idea was good and i kinda liked the environments in it back in the days.

He founded Ion Storm, yes, at their Dallas location. I believe Eidos pushed for Ion Storm Austin's creation and appointed Spector to lead the team. To be honest I think John Romero had very little to do with Ion Storm Austin's creation. He was too busy hiring his girlfriend to write strategy guides and develop levels at Ion Storm Dallas.

it was led by John Romero. The game is known as one of the major commercial failures of the video game industry. Daikatana was later ported to the Nintendo 64:eek:

Yea I went size 7 to let other know it it was a fail.
Besides not one of you Romero lovers actually read that link,It say he is doing a Ghost Recon Facebook page style game...mmm that is not PC it is mobile.

Well, without Ion Storm Austin, there would be no Deus Ex. Without John Romero, there would be no Ion Storm at all. He just triggered a chain of good events...

If you and all those ... individuals like you say it was "fail" it doesn't mean it's true. Plus I don't give a ... wooden nickel if it was a commercial flop. As a video game it wasn't failure. It was rather interesting and innovative. Unlike all that mediocre crap that is selling darn well for brainwashed masses.

Daikatana was later ported to the Nintendo 64

Um so what? So was doom and quake.

That ended in a commercial failure (at least until Eidos bought the property).

Deus Ex was a good concept and well executed but Romero's businesses just can't seem to stop from drowning financially.

I'm not a Romero lover, but, i have to point out...

"Loot Drop's only current confirmed project is Ghost Recon Commander - a social spin-off from Ubisoft's tactical shooter series due out on Facebook and mobile platforms some time this Summer."

That doesn't mean it is THIS particular project that Romero was talking about. I don't think you could do the fast paced FPS gameplay he was talking about via facebook.

Commercial failure or not, Deus Ex is still a masterpeice of its own even 10 years later.
Where i've played Deus Ex 1 like hundreds of times, i only played Deus Ex 3, 1 and a half time.
It's not a bad game, but it just doesn't have the feel of the original which was far more deep and sort of honest game.

well i wouldn't say deus ex 3 actually lacks compared to the original - the time and environment have to be considered as well.

when deus ex 1 came out it was amazing. no other game had 3d graphics (and decent ones) and was sooo free as that game. plus it had a good sci fi story, which is also lacking elsewhere.
fast forward and deus ex 3s graphics aren't anything special (not bad, just no great) , the freedom and character advancement is not so much as we've seen in recent games.
it just doesn't pack that punch that deus ex 1 did, but i think that' s because we can't help but compare it to whatever else is out at the time.

commercial failure or not, it was a defining game in my ... personal history ...

It still is. I played it the first time after Crysis was released and was blown away by how great it was. As someone said: The original is an RPG-FPS while the third and second games are FPS with RPG elements.

Anyway, this could be very interesting.

Yes, original Deus Ex gave real freedom. Game wasn't linear and that was great. You could kill every single critical character (except for Paul) but game still continued. Invisible War was awesome but it was more linear and because of that its duration seemed way shorter. But it was a good game as well.

plus it had a good sci fi story, which is also lacking elsewhere.
It wasn't only one game for that time with awesome plot. The other one was Perfect Dark.

Damn, I was beaten to the punch. I was going to poist Diakatana pt II. :(

It will be nice to have another PC first game, but John Romero hasn't done anything memorable in a long time.

While I don't have a whole lot of faith in John Romero's projects, it would be nice to have some new IP in the shooter genre, especially if it is a change from the traditional shooter model.

I wonder if George Romero is his dad. If so, this will be an epic zombie fps MMO.
