The Daily Beast said:
Vanity Fair dove deep into the troubled Joint Strike Fighter program, and what it found isn’t pretty. The $1.5 trillion plane that was supposed to be the next generation in fighter jets is years over deadline, billions over budget, and might not be able to safely fly. A helmet that uses cameras to give pilots 360-degree vision, one of the centerpieces of the F-35, was supposed to be its crowning achievement, but Lockheed still hasn’t finished the software for it. Furthermore, pilots who’ve tested the F-35 have found it laggy, disorienting, and blurry. The plane has been grounded repeatedly for broken parts, it can’t fly near lightning, and the stealth coating burns off when it goes supersonic.

That last sentence in the quote...ouch.

Canada is reassessing it's plans to buy this plane now. It's thinking Super Hornet instead.

Sounds like we need a private market Fighter Jet-X program.

Too bad, I was hoping to read amazing things about the F-35...not Vanity Fair showing how much fail it is. Lol.

It is a vanity project, I suppose it should get featured in Vanity Fair

I am actually pretty surprised that they are not building technology part by part: get the basic airframe to work first, add stealth coating, etc. Test 360 view on one of the older airframe (F-15?) to fix the errors, and then incorporate it into the JSF. Instead they rolled everything in, and got a clusterf**k.

I guess they should have chosen the x-32.

Stealth starts with the airframe. RAM is far less effective than an airframe designed not to reflect RADAR energy back at the source. Case in point: F-15's tail fins, engine intakes, and engine exhaust is a dead give away with no real solution how to fix it. It also doesn't have VTOL capabilities like the F-35 is supposed to have.

I think the heart of the problem is the aircraft has too many ambitious technologies that haven't been tested on other platforms yet (like the 360 degree HUD).

I suspect it would have ran into similar issues.
