Well, Just received the new Motherboard along with a Pentium G3258 Anniversary Edition, the idea being that I would have some fun pushing the CPU to the limit, then after about 3 months get a new quadcore, hence why I got a Z97 with a very budget CPU.

The problem is the thing won't start up, checked, double checked and tested everything, memory is fine, PSU is fine, CPU and Cooler re-seated 3 times etc etc. When I press the on button (Board has one as well as case, tried both) the system kind of powers up for a split second and then stops, lights all come on and fans start to spin. Where I have said I have checked the various components, I have tried them in my daughters FM2 setup and they work fine.

The only thing I can think of is that the motherboard Bios could be the release one as there are only 3 for this board on their site, the board only went retail late June or early July, the 2nd Bios listed at Biostar says it enhanced CPU compatibility, my guess is that as both the CPU and the board came out at similar times I have the release Bios, could anyone who has ever had a similar issue with CPU compatibility confirm or otherwise that the symptoms above of a split second power on followed by a halt is typical of a lack of compatibility please, I have never had it happen before thankfully!

If this is the case I will either talk the retailer into taking it back and flashing it or if needs be I will buy a cheap Celeron Socket 1150 that has been around for ages and flash the Bios before selling the Celeron on fleabay.

Thanks!

You tested the PSU in your daughters PC?
Also, out of blind curiosity (I've seen this weird thing happen before), if you unplug the CPU 4/8 pin and try powering it on, does it stay on for longer?
I'm assuming there are no shorts?

I'll try that one! Albeit it sounds a bit random but I will give anything a go after the repeated attempts yesterday. Yes, I actually built my daughetrs rig yesterday too and the PSU for hers was ordered for Saturday delivery, it hadnt arrived by lunchtime and as my PC was in bits I tested hers with my PSU, hers arrived at 3.30.

Shorts are difficult to determine, I checked every single connection and even swapped over the case headers just in case I had got some the wrong way around.

I really am hoping someone will come in and say that they installed a CPU on a board with an unsupported Bios and it was exactly like my problem!

Probably a BIOS thing, a dodgy motherboard doesnt lose power instantly, it tends to stay powered and just not post anything. I would lend you my 3220 but the parents are streaming their TV series from the machine a lot more these days.

Thanks, when I get home going to try the "short" thing too, once I did screw in a board to tightly one end andit kind of distorted the PCB or put pressure in a particular area that resulted in similar symptoms, I tried the 8 pin CPU power you suggested but the exact same.

Quick on/off sounds very much like bios to me, especially as you've checked psu,ram etc.

Well finally problem is solved and RCoon was right...... it was a short! I took the 280X out to find that jammed between the graphics card and the motherboard edge was a screw stuck between 2 lumps of metal solder, took it out, put the card back in and hey presto!

Now the problem is that it boots into windows BUT because the chipset drivers are not yet installed I have no mouse or keyboard to actually double click the driver install icon, tried every setting in Bios but nothing, suppose I had better hunt around in the attic to see if I can find an old PS2 keyboard or something, unless ayone else has any ideas?

Not even if you plug them into the most bog standard USB 2.0 port on the MoBo? Usually at least some of the ports accept USB devices, I know USB 3.0 just doesnt most of the time.

Correct but have tried all 8 ports ...... nothing :( NO USB ports work once in windows, in Bios no problem, both keyboard and mouse work fine, have just found at work a USB to PS2 adapter so I will try the PS2 port when I get home.

if this doesnt help try make dos boot cd or tumb stick with autoexec.bat with silent install command for drivers in it

In safe mode, too?
Is this a new install or a old install?
If an old install it may be possible the installed drivers for the USB may be of a different maker. (ex. You may have an Asmedia chipset and Renesas drivers are installed).

Just a thought.

Old install of windows and yes I am pretty sure different driver required, hopefully PS2 will work in legacy mode, if not then It's ne6's suggestion next! Safe mode tried.... same outcome :(

PS2 don't work, made up a DOS boot CD, added drivers and just like my earlier attempt to do a complete new install of windows (but on my other drive so it wouldn't wipe my SSD but just give me access to the SSD once I get into the windows envoirnment) I get to a point where it asks for confirmation or I have to click a prompt saying "continue" and of course with no keyboard or mouse thats difficult! Very frustrating :banghead:

Anyway I have had a bright idea, well at least I hope it's bright, tomorrow night I am going to put my SSD that has Windows and all the new chipset drivers that I had already downloaded in prep for the upgrade into daughters PC, boot up to her HDD and OS, access my SSD, try to install some drivers to my drive and windows, disconnect, restart daughters, re-install her chipset drivers just in case my fiddling messed hers up and then re-install my SSD, boot it up and cross fingers! :)

Other than that, I have no idea where to go, even a windows recovery requires a prompt, can't re-install windows...... requires a prompt, can't boot from CD in DOS..... requires a "press enter to continue" lol

I may have missed it somewhere, but try updating your BIOS, or even reverting it! Sounds like a seriously dodgy problem when simple USB devices don't automatically install.

ALSO! When the computer begins to boot, spam F8, and it should give you a massive long list of how you'd like to boot. Try booting without the "digitally signed driver enforcement" crap, that may just do the trick.

EDIT: This is why I said I don't buy Biostar motherboards anymore. Hate to say I told you so ;)

Problem solved just about, left it running for ages trying to self update drivers, it had crashed previously at this point but after about 20 minutes windows had managed to load some USB drivers so am pretty much there. @RCoon problem has nothing to do with Biostar, thing is it appears that USB drivers are pretty much universal but the root hubs can differ, not my area of expertise but it seems that my old board was different and therefore there was a driver conflict here, the fact that USB worked in Bios just not in windows indicates it's a driver and not hardware issue...... I think! All's well that "hopefully" ends well, just lost 3 days of my life lol, let's hope it's positive from hereonin..... thanks all for support and advice.

dont forget to clean drivers first for old mb then drivers for new one and make clean driver install after or things can mess again at some point
