As a big Killing Floor game series fan, I was fiddling a lot with its engine and found out quite some really nice tweaks and settings as well as designed few of my own. Since fiddling with INI files isn’t always the easiest way, I’ve made a simple GUI driven tweaker for Killing Floor 2.

Highlights:
  • Automatically detects Killing Floor 2 settings files. Fully portable!
  • Easy to use with descriptions and ability to restore tweaks to default settings in just few clicks. No more messed up INI settings!
  • Control hidden graphics and performance settings
  • Enhance audio quality and performance settings
  • Enhanced gore level selection with 6 presets ranging from no gore to insane 100x times the original gore

Insane amount of gore...
2016-02-27_00001.jpg

Presenting the INSANE gore preset and self shadowing of the player model. So much gore even the most powerful systems will choke on it. Also, with a "Self Shadowing" tweak, player weapons and hands cast real-time shadow onto itself, creating even more immersive experience.

Enhanced softer shadow edge filtering
2016-02-27_00003.jpg

Presenting additional filtering of shadow edges, making them even smoother.

Enable player shadow
2016-02-27_00006.jpg 2016-02-27_00010.jpg

Presenting player shadow casting onto the world surfaces. You don't just see lights casting shadows of other players, you can now also see shadow of your weapon and your own arms. This one is a bit glitchy since player model doesn't exist as a whole so you can only see a shadow of your weapon and arms (what you otherwise see in your field of view), but not your full body. Which is a bit funny dracula like experience, but still, most of the time seeing a shadow of your own weapon is nice. Not sure why developers don't use full virtual player model and have player shadow enabled by default. It's nothing more creepy than getting scared of your own shadow in dark corridors :D

I wanted to upload a video in action, but with my crappy upload, it would take like 4+ hours so screenshots should do the trick, showcasing some of the features like self shadowing, player shadow, softer shadow edges and the INSANE gore level which doesn't really fades away any corpse or blood. It's just stupendously and ridiculously gory :D

I was observing Self Shadowing today on rifles. I don't get it why this isn't enabled by default in the game. It looks million times better with Self Shadowing. By default it's just rifle shading and reflections that change with aiming around. With Self Shadowing, rifle itself is casting actual dark shadows onto itself as you move it around. Considering you have the rifle 100% of the time in front of you, it's pretty amazing. And costs nearly no resources. I'm so impressed I might actually make a short video of it. :D

Btw, I'm working on KF2 Tweaker v1.1 already with:
- Revised main category menu
- Re-arranged some settings
- New Texture Streaming tweaks (quite a lot of them)
- Probably a graphics reset as well as total reset of all settings back to default

Killing Floor 2 Tweaker v1.2 released!

I’ve been busy, so here is another big update. Quite a lot of useful tweaks, especially ability to disable annoying intro videos, further adjusted the gore level for Normal preset and completely redesigned the “Reset Settings”. It no longer deletes config files, it directly restores all the settings included in the tweaker back to factory defaults. There is also bunch of other stuff that may or may not do anything :D

1.2 (2016-03-02)

  • Option to disable intro videos
  • New High Quality Reflections setting
  • Added streaming of textures only setting
  • Added permanent objects memory setting
  • Added Minimum desired framerate option
  • Further tweaked “Normal” gore preset
  • Redesigned “Reset Settings” to only reset settings modified by the tweaker back to defaults
  • Few minor text fixes

Working on v1.3. Most stuff has been implemented, now I'm testing tessellation. Mostly because it has to be enabled for sure since it's a DX11 game, but it's also used in most stupendously useless way. I've inspected several world items that were all blocky and they haven't imporved when I've set tessellation to more aggressive parameters. Framerate tanked quite badly, but visually, I couldn't tell a difference. Those Paris tables and chairs in Paris bar on spawn point were horrendously blocky regardless of distance, same for concrete pillars around subway entrance.

It would be a lot easier if I could use wireframe mode to inspect actual tessellation behavior, so if anyone knows a console command that works in the game I'd appreciate it. I'd use a hack, but I'm too afraid of getting my game banned on Steam or something because of it so I'm not doing that.

1.3 (2016-03-04)

- Added option to control mouse acceleration
- Added option to control mouse movement scaling
- Added Efficient Multi-Threading option
- Added tessellation optimization
- Few minor text fixes

I couldn't find any obvious setting for it. It's probably a hardcoded thing... Or a parameter that isn't listed anywhere yet. :(

Not so good because they blocked bunch of them just because they are huge arses. Like self shadowing. Actual realtime shadows on player weapons. No more since Bullseye update. And it looked really good.

never saw this thread in the past, but play a lot of KF2.

With SLI enabled (and/or vsync) i get a crapton of input lag - single GPU feels like triple the frame rate it really is, in comparison.

you think the mouse related tweaks in this would help that?

I don't think that would help, though you can try. The main cause of input lag is the delay created by the multithreaded part of the game. Check the "Performance Settings" and play with "Multi-Threading" setting. "Frames Rendering Moderation" may also affect input lag.

worth a look. its weird how massive a difference single GPU to SLI, i can see 200FPS and it feels worse than 30 on single GPU.

The only problem when disabling mtulti-threading is that game will in general feel way smoother, but will suffer in later waves when lots of stuff is going on. Even on my 5820K at 4.5 GHz.

The input lag appears because the game has rendering thread and game thread split into several threads and they have to be slightly out of sync to achieve this. Not sure why exactly, but that's how developers explained it. And this out of sync state is what causes the sensation of laggy game.

Thanks :) for this handy tool!

Well I've seen some heavy physx fluid gpu bottlenecks with fps drops (40-45fps and 60-70% gpu usage when it happens).. I lowered fluid from 1million to 500k, and gpu physx 128 and 32 (was 64/16?) this seems to help a lot and made it somewhat back to fixed vsync..

I went ahead and set like so

KF2.png

Is there anything special about streaming, what to use for best scenario? Or which would be the best tweaks?

Tripwire sacked it. And they hardcoded that, so INI settings don't do anything now. So stupid, I loved self shadowing, weapons at least had shadow. Now they are just shaded, like in some Quake 3 Arena. Pathetic.

Not all. I think. The thing is, some things are really hard to verify without having the insight of the game engine itself. For shadows, it was clearly visible, texture VRAM pool can be roughly measured with MSI Afterburner. But for many other settings, it's quite possible that tweaker sets them, but they don't do anything anymore because Tripwire hardcoded the values into the game engine. They of course don't document any of this which is super lame.

It's not your fault bro, it's unfortunate what tripwire has done, they've practically ruined the game, artificial intelligence is now crap, they've nerfed all perks, that blue line that comes out when you use berserker's weapons is just awful, in My case, for some reason with all the graphics in ultra, the use of my GPU and CPU does not exceed 60% and the fps are between 40-50, just shit. Well on the other hand I wanted to ask you, in which version of KF2 can I use the KF2 Tweaker?, to download an older version of the game from the internet (pirate obviously :p).

Well bypassing texture streaming fixed fps hickups, I see whole vram filled @ 6.1GB, and it eliminated any streaming glitches when running around, although now it takes a bit longer to load.

But physx is still hit and miss, fluids is the most demanding and can sometimes still have stalling issues with low gpu usage drops, and then the next moment full gpu 100% with gpu bottlenecks.. I lowered it further from default to keep it more stable, although I didnt play it much recently.
