I do not know if this has been posted before but would be awesome for people that mainly use laptops everyday and still want to do some decent gaming!

The power is an issue though. If you have to use an ATX PSU for it, kinda defeats the point a little. What makes me question it even more is the fact it's going to push the power provided from the 8+6pin through the PCI-E slot. Are GPU PCI-E connectors rated to take that much juice?

here's the solution, a x16 pci adapter

click me!

obviously, you're not gonna take the full performance from the external gpu but... almost a 80% ;)

sorry, didn't understand.

the power is drain by the gpu, so it doesn't go to the laptop... it goes only the hdmi signal, generated by the gpu

I don't think portability is what this product wants to address but the custom case on federico's link gives me an idea: get a 200-300w Flex PSU and build a case for the GPU + PSU. If you don't mind limiting yourself to lower midrange parts you could go with a 120-150w pico PSU.

I think this is perfect for people with laptops sporting nice CPUs that don't have a discrete GPU and don't want, can't afford, don't have the space, etc., for a desktop PC.

I don't see that they're powering the GPU through the PCI-e slot. The video shows them connecting the PCI-e power cable from the PSU to the GPU, and even saying so. On the other hand, if a person went with a low power GPU, like a GTX 750 Ti (one without a 6-pin PCI-e power connector), it looks like you could run this off of a 90 watt "brick", which would reduce clutter. mPCI-e is only x1, so anything faster than the GTX 660 that he used would most likely be strangled by the interface.

These aren't designed to be portable, so needing an ATX power supply isn't an issue.

And they aren't pushing all that power through the PCI-E slot. The slot will only pull as much power as it needs.

Yea this is mainly if you are a business guy that only has a laptop to come home and hook in the mPCIex connector and use his external monitor.

Has anyone seen the ViDock from Village Instruments?

http://www.villageinstruments.com/tiki-index.php?page=ViDock

The ViDock 4 ++ Overdrive model (interesting naming scheme...) has a 320W power supply, has one of each 6-pin + 8-pin connectors and can support graphics card up to ~320mm in length, all in quite a compact box.

It's just the chassis. According to their website the customer supplies the video card. 3 different models, that sport No power connector; 6-pin power connector, or 6+8/8+8.

Wattage vs Amps

I'm missing something? I know that a card uses some +3.3V and the rest +12 V. W1zzard benched the R9 290 as using a total of 245 watts. The VDock 4 Plus is rated for PCIe cards up to 225 watts. Not all of that is on +12V but either way the VDock 4 Plus isn't adequate for the R9 290 whether looking at amps or watts.

Pretty old card there

Honestly just get a desktop replacement laptop.

Even gaming laptops have underpowered GPUs. You can't get desktop level performance in them. Although nVidia has been trying.

I'm the perfect buyer for these solutions because while I have a gaming laptop, the performance is well under that of my tower. The 660M just sucks compared to my tower. I often have to run games with lower detail while traveling. Now when I travel I tend to be in one spot for about a month as I have an inheritance place I'm fixing up. If I could purchase one of these to leave there, then every year I'd have the use of desktop graphics instead of struggling on laptop.

So vacation home buyers are the perfect market. Specially ones who don't want to leave expensive PCs sitting for months. Is there enough market? There is some, but I don't think people are aware of it. Lot of people own 2nd homes, especially areas where land prices are still cheap, but they'd be more apt to just buy a PC or suffer on a laptop for however long they'd stay in the other home.

So the question is, is it worth the price? Not only would I have to spend money on the kit, I'd also have to get another GPU. When adding that all up, it is a big expense if you are only staying in an area for a few weeks. So I probably wouldn't buy one unless I got some extra cash to do so, or if I really needed a new laptop but I didn't want to go another $1000+.

The saving grace of this device is the price: $50 is totally within impulse buy territory. I might bite and have it around if only as a conversation starter :toast:
