Laptop suggestions

Hi,
I need some suggestions on what laptop to get for my 6 year old. something small, with a decent amount of storage for movies and pictures, play games. I would like to keep it under$500.00.

I'd get a cheap Asus laptop, they usually have a 1-year drop/spill/damage warranty, which makes them perfect for kids. My old Asus K55N has enough grunt for gaming, enough space for everything needed, and is light on power usage, needing only a 45w power brick to run it.

That model is no longer made, but a co-worker of mine was able to snag a couple of cheap Asus laptops from a local Staples for around $250/ea that used haswell-based CPU's and integrated GPU's. Not as good for gaming as an APU, but better on power management and still plenty able to game from my experience (I've actually been rather impressed overall).

At that price (I forget the model, I'll ask him tomorrow), you could have a spare ready.

You could also do a small file server or P2P and host the files on a different workstation, give his account access to those and use a chromebook. Though you do mention gaming...is that browser games? Minecraft? Heavier games?

I would say a 10 inch $150 Windows tablet for that. You wont be sorry if it breaks, still enough for watching cartoons and child games.

Maybe as others have suggested better to get a cheap tablet or a refurbished business grade laptop as those can take much more abuse
