Hi guys, check out my parts list on the left for background.

Been thinking about going Fury X vs 980 Ti, but locally the 980 Ti reference card is cheaper by about 80USD or so.

Since I pretty much would have to stick to single card setups for NVIDIA, should I go for the 980 Ti?

Unfortunately, this is not likely to get you a good recommendation. What you will get are supporters of each camp who will likely devolve into arguments back and forth and be of little use to you.

What you should do is study each of the reviews carefully, and then decide which one is best for you. Either one would be an excellent choice if you've decided it must be one of them.

EDIT: it may be that economcs (the price) is your deciding factor, in which case, they are so close, that you should go with the cheaper 980Ti.

I wouldn't get the reference GTX 980 Ti, Fury X vs non-reference GTX 980 Ti is personal preference

There's really nothing wrong with the reference model either. It's also personal preference. :D

That seems like the foremost thing on my mind right now.

The reason I'm comfortable with a reference card is that I have the G10 bracket to hook it up to an AIO. Temperature will never be an issue.

As @erocker said I wouldn't bother with either for 1080p unless you plan a monitor upgrade also. But if you're set on it, definitely go with the cheaper 980Ti.

At 1080p, go for a GTX 970!
But if like to put everything at ultra and just go!

Seems like either one of these cards will be the temporary end game :D

Only a 980ti can give me maxed out performance at 1080p for games like Witcher 3... Or so I'm told...

Yeah, there's alot to be said for maxxing out all games and getting 60fps at 1080p, something even a 970 can't always do. I'll take top-notch quality AND smooth frame rate over a larger than 1080p resolution anyday.

That's probably true, but is it worth paying double the price? The two settings you would need to change with a 970 on the Witcher 3 would be "grass density" to high instead of ultra and "foliage distance" on high instead of ultra. I personally can't tell the difference between the settings.

With a price difference like that the 980 Ti is a no-brainer. I prefer NVIDIA anyway as they work so well. Had them for years with very few problems.

Also, you can't have enough graphics power for games as there will always be something to significantly drop your framerate. This is regardless of your resolution.

Yeah, I'm pretty much all set for the 980 ti unless something happens and AMD unleashes some massive driver update that magically gives the fury x another 10fps or so.

It's MYR 3,000 for the Fury X against 2,800 for the 980ti.

As for the price, well, I can afford the upgrade, and I want to semi future-proof my rig a little. Worse case scenario I'll have to spend another 3-4k at the end of the year to play at 1440p with a new mobo and SLI 980Ti, but I like the comfort of knowing I can just jump into the settings and set everything to ultra.

Yeap, I'm getting the 980 ti instead. The big debate in my mind would have been much tougher had the Fury X showed up bearing the 980 instead of maintaining parity.

And yeah, who knows what the next titles will do to bring my PC to it's knees? #fallout4

my money (emm...your money) is on Fury X (should be). Main reason : it's more future-proof

Even if you only have a 1080p monitor owning such a powerful card makes all the sense in the world. Cuz at this resolution you can game at 100+ FPS. Thus you will experience a superb different type of gaming experience. There is a freshness to it,just gorgeous.
People say the human eye can't tell the difference with anything above 60 fps. Maybe, maybe not. I'm not an expert.
But i've played Grid autosport at 30+,then 60 and then 100+ fps on different pc's .Well just 2 different pc's the last one had a different card after the upgrade. At 100+ fps it was a dream! And i don't even like that stupid Grid game,it's so boring. But at 100+ fps man,i could have played it forever and ever

EDIT: it had screen tearing at 100+ fps. But ti still felt so real and fresh. As if i was in a real simulator actually driving.

You never once mention how the Fury X is more future proof...

I'm really trying to be unbiased in my selection, but you're not helping hahaha

Do your homework. Read the reviews. Then you don't have to ask, pardon my bluntness, stupid questions. Like how is it more future proof. Being biased is part of forming personal opinions. You're entitled to an opinion, just like the rest of us. There's nothing wrong with them. Bias only becomes problematic when abused. Like when you don't respect other opinions besides yours.

A furyX will certainly play 1080p for a long time. Considering most monitors can't draw over 60hz/60FPS unless specifically advertising such though, you really won't notice the difference.

Without going into details:
https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/3ay1fb/discussion_fury_x_benchmarks_released/
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/R9_Fury_X/31.html

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-radeon-r9-fury-x,4196-9.html

Most review sites peg the 980 Ti as slightly ahead, and only in some cases on parity with the Fury X.

I did my homework, and I'm asking for opinions for something which there is no data; the future. If you're going to be a condescending prick about it, at least source your comments first. Don't try to hide your lack of backing with mere "bluntness" and call someone stupid.

I have made zero opinions in this thread, and I'm open to suggestions/opinions, of which the majority seems to support the 980 Ti decision.

If you have something to back your words, or something relevant to say, say it. Otherwise shut the fuck up.

A furyX will certainly play 1080p for a long time. Considering most monitors can't draw over 60hz/60FPS unless specifically advertising such though, you really won't notice the difference.

Thanks! I do suppose @1080p I won't really notice a difference at this point in time, but I guess with the 980 being slightly cheaper I should go for that instead.

I just switched in my R9 290X for a 980. Despite NVIDIA's recent drivers being a crap shoot, it works swell and the power consumption is amazingly low.

Here's hoping that the Ti will up that by more than a notch.

From the specs, it should. 980 is just barely faster than the R9 290X/390X. That 980 ti is well worth the extra money in hindsight, but you know, I already ordered so...

Heh, I could technically return it (already in mailstream), but... I dunno. Even the 980 is pretty potent and $100 is nice to have too. :)
