Hello there friends, I'm about to buy a new GPU, the GTX 970 aka The Gimp, I have a problem with my mobo tho, the asus P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3. It may be just the GPU or not IDK but Im looking for a new mobo also. My CPU is i7 2700k.

I am looking for a motherboard with this older socket that has more than just 1 PCIe 3 slot. any suggestions?

I'd recommend something like the AsRock Z75 PRO 3.
EDIT: No PCI 3.0 support with your current CPU, limited to 16 lanes, too... :(

Your motherboard supports a single card at 3.0 x16 or two cards at 3.0 x8/x8. Your processor however, only supports PCIe 2.0. You would need a new processor to support the current version of PCIe. The difference between 2.0 and 3.0 is negligible for a 970 though, so just keep what you have.

In any case the difference in performance between pci-e 16x 2.0 and 3.0 is virtually non existent

My i7-2600K works pretty good with my two R9-280X OC GPUs in Crossfire.

I'm replacing the i7-2600K this week with an i5-4690K CPU and Z87 Board.

Are you gonna play at 1080p? Price / performance wise the R9 290 would be your best choice. 75% of the performance for 45% of the price. Also the R 300 series are coming soon as well

I will play 1080p but im planning to get a second monitor ( I'll just play on one, I want two for more space for things like TS, Skype, Videos on other monitor while Im grinding something) and I am a stundent, which means, nothing really. But This is the last rig my parents will fund for me until I get myself a job, so it has to last long, I have around 2 more years of education ahead of me, and I also want to switch from AMD and try Nvidia, I've had HD4850 and HD7970 so far. The HD4850 was a brute, and I've heard from my friend that I sold it to that it's still kicking, and man that thing took a beating of 100c+ when on full load, 7970 was a good card, but it didnt last long, around 2.5 years, and now my VMEM is failing.

i still don't get that 980 thing. it should be 50-100$ more expensive max. everything is fine with 970 line.
why pay 70% more for 15-20%???
ok its just me, any reason why you changed your mind?

Out of principle, I am not going to buy a product that is advertised differently than from what it is sold.

Nah, I got friends who run SLi / Crossfire, and I hear nothing but bitching about it from them, one card working, the other not, I need a killer single GPU card.

I'm running both, and have no problems with either. Go Figure,.............

Edit: I think that the key to running SLI and Crossfire without problems is using a really good Power Supply with lots of power. A 64-Bit OS is essential too.

Matching GPUs or close to a match helps too.

Technically, it wasn't advertised differently from what it was sold.

"Out of principle, I am not going to buy a product that is advertised differently than from what it is sold." but you are glad to pay even more money for the same company for a product which is (in my opinion) overpriced :)
yeah i love human logic. btw hey 970 has 4 GB :) its just 3,5+5
no one will argue 980 is one of the best single gpu atm. but for 1080p hm a little too much
144hz monitor maybe somehow. still im very budged oriented atm. so if you have enough $. my advices only help to get price/performance :)
