Whatever you decide to play, pray that it won't be Maple Story. Worst game. EVER.

Age of Empires 2. Nothing can beat it. The best 3d RTS I played was probably SupCom but you have that.. What about Company of Heroes, that was pretty fun.

I can do nothing but x2 you on this one.

The official Microsoft Zone was shut down, but there is a fan made online app at www.IGZones.com that still has close to 1k players on it all the time.

If you want something a little more modern, take a look at Sins of a Solar Empire. The online isn't very populated, but if you can find a couple friends who love wasting time on RTS's, you can spend hours in an epic match.

It no lacks micro, especially on early-mid game! In late... propably yes macro > micro, but still I have seen so many games by pro players (gosu) ,where totally awesome micro managament won the game. Good game for play on bnet, but there is so many map hack users;/ so better to find other servers with skilled players if you want challenge;)

Total War series is good (but totally different from Supreme Commander) ,when you use some mods (more realistic game or more balanced and improved AI).

Yeah, I was gonna comment on the micro, but you cleared it up. :)

Speaking of hacks.... There happens to be a resolution hack for the latest version.

I don't play it online anymore, but we played it at a recent lan party. Can't beat Starcraft UMS maps. :rockout:

Edit:
Oh yeah... forgot to say, some good rts games that I have played (in no particular order):
starcraft
dawn of war
any 'total war' game
age of empire 3
sins of a solar empire
1701 A.D. (city builder)
command and conquer (any, generals is probably my fav though)
homeworld
