Hey!
I'm in the market for a good router which will need to handle 250Mbps up/down, basically a similar connection to the one in my signature. It will have a few wired and WiFi connections, machines will be streaming, online gaming and the occasional server. Currently I'm looking at his one: Asus RT-N18U
Maybe I can get away with a cheaper one? Thanks!

Nope, I'm in Europe. There's a thin line between cheaping out and overpaying.

I got a Linksys EA6900 bnib expect I flashed it to Asus firmware I wounderstand sell and ship for $100.

Also have a bnib Netgear R7000 I would sell and ship for $130. Can also flash to Asus.

Both routers work with Asus merlin, tomato shibby, tomato toastman, dd-wrt. And can handle a Gigabit link up/down as long as you choose a firmware with hardware acceleration.

Oh, also have a bnib tp-link archer c7 v2 I could ship for $75

:peace:

EDIT: I see now you are in Europe, I am in US but still a possibility.

USA routers require a step down converter in the EU, they also dont conform to EU regulations on wireless signals.

Most USA router power bricks run 110-220 like your laptop (but will need a wall adapter for prongs). And with open source firmware you can set any region you wish.

Um, thanks? But I'm not looking for ordering a router abroad..

Are there brands to avoid? In the end I'll buy which looks the best..

I would go for something from Netgear, Amped or Arris myself.

Arris makes equipment for both ATT and Comcast, both suck for wifi. Netgear Nighthawk is a good suggestion. Also most Wifi Signals only go up to 150Ft anyway

+1 For the Ubiquiti Edge Router Lite. It's a BOSS of a router for the price. To buy a Cisco or Juniper with the same performance and feature set you would need to add at least another 0 to the price tag.

I got an Asus AC87U and I am very happy with its software and performance, 4 Ethernet+Switch used and some more wifi devices well handled. A bit pricey (200€), but it is not the standard mom&dad home internet gateway.

+1 to ERL...but if you need true 250mbit WAN throughout you need a higher end router than most of what was mentioned here. The ERL is good for around 150 iirc.

If you need 250 I think the Edgrouter 8 would do the trick. It might come up short too. If these do...consumer grade Asus and Linksys/Cisco will too.

There are people getting 1Gbps on the ERL:

https://community.ubnt.com/t5/EdgeM...TTH-with-Dual-Stack-IPv4-amp-IPv6/td-p/532268

Just need to make sure that you are using the HW offloading (so no bridged interfaces).

My question is if you still have to disable those same items in 1.7 to achieve the same results. I use QoS and I imagine that puts a huge damper on top speed. I only have a 30/5 and it peaks those out with my config...that's a far cry from 250/250 connection.

Thanks for the share!

You do. You can't offload most QoS or modify forewall rules. It's kind of similar to junipers PFE and Routing Control Plane. If the traffic needs to go through the control plane then you are going to lose speed.

Thanks for the suggestions! The Ubiquiti Edge Router Lite is in my price point, but does it have WiFi? Also, I should have mentioned the price - I'm willing to spend 100 Euros. My current router is a D-Link DIR-825 which has handled 250/250 very nicely, have used only one band though.

Edgrouter 8

These two are not available :(

ERL as Remixed said is only a router/firewall. No built-in wireless. You want to buy a UniFi AP (well you can buy an AP you want, but UniFi's are excellent on performance and budget): https://www.ubnt.com/unifi/unifi-ap/

The AP provides wireless, and allows you to manage your wireless networks, how many of them you have, if any have guest services, the bandwidth limitation imposed on each network using group control, etc...the management software works quite well and makes configuring them a breeze.

ERL + UniFI AP combo FTW! :toast:
