Looking for some help here...

So I pretty much just finished my PC build and am having an issue, thinking maybe I overlooked something.

When I start the computer up it starts for about 2 seconds, then shuts down and repeats this cycle until I shut off the power supply. I havent been able to figure it out yet any suggestions?

Note: It is gigabyte X58A Ud5 mobo with a 1366 930 Proc. Power supply is a Corsair modular 850. 3x2Gig HyperX ddr3 memory, 2x 5870 Vapour-x grafix card and Xfi titanium sound card. Corsair H50 cooler. I am not trying to run it connected to a monitor or a keyboard or anything, just by itself, it basically flashes on and off.

Start from a minimum, 1 GPU, 1 stick of RAM and try to boot. It looks like PSU since you have 2 5870's in there.

PSU is going out. That is were I would start.

I had the exact same symptoms with a bad stick of RAM. Hopefully it's just a stick, not the PSU.

Its a brand new 850 watt corsair!! That would make me cry....besides I dont even remember where I bought it its been so long ago...and I dont have another one that powerful to test.

You can test the PSU by itself without being hooked up to the system. Let me see if I can find the link to that one.

Swapping around RAM now, 3 sticks of it and its Tri-Channel.....


Edit, swapped all the RAM around to each slot one at a time and no change.

I still think your PSU is the cause.

Ok, Did the paperclip test as above, PSU came on. Of course nothing else powered up because I didnt have it plugged into the mobo. Should I do this with it plugged in to the 24 pin from the backside of the connector?

Definitely not! Try isolating your RAM sticks to see if one of those is faulty

Ive swapped ALL my sticks each to a different slot one at a time. I even took my extra one thats never been out of the package and tried it in each slot. I removed one of the Grfx cards and still no go.

Im thinking its my mobo...Stupid question...is it even possible to install the cpu in the wrong direction...even remotely?

Could be a short, CPU overheating, bad memory(or memory that the board doesn't like the SPD profile of), bad PSU, or bad board.

Could also be a lack of an 8-pin plug, or a bad conenction on the 8-pin.

CPUs are "keyed"; should be obvious when it's inserted wrong.

Could also be a bad drive.

A PCI POST code reader would help out big time here.

Its a short. Take your motherboard out of your cabinet, and place it on a cardboard.

Then install CPU, RAM, and GPU and PSU and switch it on. See what happens.

Have you tried clearing the CMOS?

I have a clear CMOS button on the back of the board which I pressed after I tried to turn it on and it started cycling. Keep in mind this is my first build ive been working on it off and on for a LONG time....so many other things going on. I havent hooked it to a monitor or keyboard or anything...

I havent tried clearing the CMOS any other way though. And I havent been into the bios at all.

Ok, While still in the case I unplugged my hard drives and still had the same issue. So I pulled the mobo and put it on a bench and hooked it up to my psu with the grafic cards all the memory and the sound card. Powered it up....still turned on, shut right off. Removed things one at a time until I had nothing but the cpu cooler and a stick of memory in it. Still...turns on, shuts right off. Shuffled ALL my memory around to ALL slots one at a time...Still same issue every time. ?IT doesnt even turn on long enough for the chip to get hot, like one second run time then off. What are your thoughts?

Sounds exactly like what my Gigabyte boards do when they cant boot do to incorrect bios settings or incompatible ram.

Im willing to bet that its bad ram/cpu/mb any way you can test the components with another system.

Unfortunately no. Im kinda screwed here. Id have to buy new RAM to test or PSU etc...Unfortunately im the most technologically advanced person I know!


seems that on the compatibility list the version of my memory this mobo works with is a latency 9-9-9. The version I have is 8. Could that be the issue here?

Start with the basics. As mentioned already. Re-seat the CPU run it on a table not in the case. CPU, 1 GPU, 1 stick ram, no drives. If it goes to the BIOS and stays on then add something. When its off of course. If it still does it. Then one of those parts is the problem and I doubt seriously if its the PSU

Thanks. I did that already...im at a loss. My only option is to buy new RAM and test it. On the gigabyte site however, the memory compatability lists memory that apparently NO ONE sells anymore....

Its funny...NONE of the memory that shows in the compatibility list in the 1800mhz to 2100mhz range are sold ANYWHERE, not even Newegg....What happened here? No brand is available...did I miss something, are there problems with these memory sticks?

just buy a cheap 1333mhz 1gb stick to test, compatible obviously

Had a build doing the same thing not long ago.

Went threw alot of trouble like you are and turned out to be the PSU.

Not good! Well, Ill keep testing and see if I can narrow it down further, Im not even sure if I can RMA this mobo....but id like to.
