In the UK, the word idiot, isnt really offensive anymore, because it is no longer associated with actual retarded people, but the word spastic is offensive, when used to mock disabled people.

In Britain, Spastic is considered an offensive word to many whilst idiot is not.

This is a very naive comment. You are posting from Greece, this word probably means very little to you and this is reflected in your attitude towards it. I am sure there are many words in Greek that you would find offensive if people in the UK were to use without thinking.

Spastic in UK English was a word originally used to describe sufferers of Cerebral Palsy, which was cruelly then used as an insult, implying that someone was mentally handicapped. It is not the kind of word that should be used by a large commercial organisation such as Nintendo.

I live in the UK, I have for 28 years (all of my life) so I think I know a little bit more about our 'slang' then you.

Like Jimmy said, the word idiot, is almost 'comical' now. ie, if you m8 did something stupid, you would call him an idiot, he/she would probably agree and laugh it off.

But if your said m8, did something stupid and you called him/her a spastic, then they could take it to offense, because the word is associated with savere mental/physical handicap.

Another example, if my son (hes only 4) was messing around and someone said "you boy was running around like an idiot and bumped into someone", I wouldnt like this person to call my child an idiot, but I would understand what they meant. But if this said person called my son a spastic, I would probably put them on their arse!

HellsVagabond - Im not sure if you are being deliberately obtuse, but you are CLEARLY missing the point of this thread and are trying to drag it off on an irrelevant tangent.

Many words in the English language can be traced back to other languages, such as Latin and Greek. This does NOT give the original "owners" of the word carte blanche over all future uses and meaning. If you were to study language, you would realise that many offensive words have innocuous backgrounds but that does not lessen there ability to offend in a modern context.

When I first saw this, I was like ZOMG, Nintendo released a game with a wordy dird, but seeing the word I almost wanted to laugh....until the wikipedia entry and the uk slang of it.

If the above happened in the US, EITHER 'phrase' would be acceptable. If someone called my 4yr old (he's 4 today...has a new atv the lucky bastard) a 'spaz' we in the US would laugh it off the same as 'idiot' b/c it means something different here. Read the wikipedia link.

ITS OK FOR THE SAME WORD TO MEAN DIFFERENT THINGS IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. Some people need to learn RESPECT FOR OTHER CULTURES. Nintendo got it right. They realized in the UK culture, forms of the word 'spaz' are offensive, so they took the proper action. I bet the same word can be found in teh NTSC US versions (as the uk versions are PAL), but its not offensive here so no action is needed.

almost - its the shortened version "fag" that we Brits call cigarettes. Oh, the trouble I got into in the States for saying I was just going out to smoke a fag..........

Faggots are also baked or fried ball of seasoned chopped liver but they aren't very popular in modern cooking.
