oh, I've just thought of another good one that makes me titter, especially as it has featured in a few episodes of the Simpsons.

In the US, Fanny refers to the backside, (bum, ass, posterior etc...) but in the UK it refers to the erm..., female frontside.. :laugh:

But aren't you posting what comes to your mind? It's unfortunate that you can't grasp why language is what it is. Few people care about etymology. Almost every word is going to be of Greek or Latin descent. Language has evolution. If you're offended that certain cultures have completely changed the meaning of words whose roots dig deep into your motherland, you'll have to deal with and get over it.

If the above happened in the US, EITHER 'phrase' would be acceptable. If someone called my 4yr old (he's 4 today...has a new atv the lucky bastard) a 'spaz' we in the US would laugh it off the same as 'idiot' b/c it means something different here. Read the wikipedia link.

ITS OK FOR THE SAME WORD TO MEAN DIFFERENT THINGS IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. Some people need to learn RESPECT FOR OTHER CULTURES. Nintendo got it right. They realized in the UK culture, forms of the word 'spaz' are offensive, so they took the proper action. I bet the same word can be found in teh NTSC US versions (as the uk versions are PAL), but its not offensive here so no action is needed.

Reminds me of the symantics around 'faggot' - IE its a cigarette in the UK, but is VERY offensive in the US.

I understand that words have different meanings in different countries, but I was trying to explain to Neptune (one of your fellow Americans) that the word spastic is a very cruel word to use in the UK

PS: Faggot does not mean a cigarette in the UK language, a fag, is considered slang for cigarette.

You would not say "give me a faggot", but you would say "give me a fag". Faggot is still slang for a homosexual male here too.

nope - its always been Fag. Maybe some ex-pats in the States thought up that word as a recovery from saying fag by mistake, i.e. add -ger to the end after you've already said it and seen the shocked looks from your US friends

Most wear them at the front, but TBH, we dont really wear them in the UK because they are considered to be a bit 'naff', they are are only really worn by holiday makers (tourists) lol

The only other time we see them used in the UK is by market traders to keep cash in, or dodgy Gypo's on The Waltzers! :roll:
