If you listen closely you can actually hear engineers getting fired.

Normally, with new technology, I could let something like this slide. However, I just can't bring myself to find this acceptable. There is nothing new technology wise here. It is just Windows running on a standard tablet, and simply opening IE causes it to crash. Or maybe it is just the POS Bing homepage...

Damn, that dude is good! Screwed it up at the end though. ;)

But at the same time, you should always have back-up hardware close by that you can grab, and others should have been ready and waiting to hand it off to him.

For all we know, it was the hardware that crashed, not the software.

Pretty sure this is customary when Microsoft launches any new product.

I agree. I wouldn't trust the Surface if it didn't crash at its debut.

meh it happens all the time to every company that present a very early sample of a new product. At E3 this year it was hilarious during the Sony press conference.

Wicked. This guy was yanked right out of his comfort zone!

You saw the way he pawed desperately at the screen, just willing it to move and the all the awkwardness and hesitations this caused him to make.

Shit happens, imho not nearly as fail as that intel guy pretending to use his new ultra book and racing wheel to play a game when you clearly saw it was just playing a movie.

...all of it is new (hardware, operating system, software). Even with new stuff, there's still unfixed bugs.

In any event, he was prepared with another one. They probably took the malfunctioning one and debugged it right after the presentation.

No, none of it is "new". The hardware is standard tablet hardware that has been on the market for a while now, the OS is Win8, which is just Win7 with a new skin, and Win8 has been in preview form for a good 8 months, and the software is IE nothing new really and if it was a software crash it shouldn't have taken the whole OS with it. I mean, seriously, the unit they were showing off has an i5 in it...

Oh come on NT, of course it's "new" - new marketing.

I still haven't seen anything yet to beat the basic hinged screen/keyboard design of a standard laptop, so all these tablets just look like gimmicks to me.

No tablet is that thin which presents issues of its own. It is also using a Tegra processor but it is unclear which.

Windows 8 represents the largest GUI change (Metro) since Windows 95 debuted. It is unlikely Metro itself was the problem, however.

The preview is Windows 8 for x86. RT is largely brand new and it is what he was showing (Pro was later).

    It's Internet Explorer 10, not 9. New.

The lockup is at about 13:50:

He doesn't mention Pro until after the 20 minute mark.

Most likely it is just windows 8 crashing nothing more. It is a new OS after all. Yeah it is windows 7 stripped down and all but still has some bugs that need sorting out. MS will get this out to the public and it will be fine when they do.

you dont think the Ivy Bridge i5 ULC processor is new? But it is. So its new hardware on that respect.

Not "New enough" to cause this kind of crash, IMHO. This is not a hardware issue. An OS issue is my guess.

Seemed like a touch issue Software and/or Hardware, not that it ever actually crashed. Perhaps even as simple as a driver issue?

Poor guy I had to pause half way through I felt so nervous for him.

It could be anything, the only thing we know for certain is, that this OS is not finished yet, but then again, they never said it was.

I wouldn't be surprised if that Surface didn't have internet access and for some reason, that caused IE10 to lock up.

Ok, I didn't realize this was the ARM version of the tablet that crashed. I'll give it that it is a new combination for hardware and software. I'll can let it slide in that case.
