Mixing speakers

Hi guys, i have a full 5.1 set of speakers and i am not happy with the surround qaulity of the rears. my dad owns a high end set of bose speakers (2.1) along with an amp and some other shizzle which is sitting in a storage unit, my question is, is it possible to hook these up to one sound card and produce a larger 7.2/7.1 set??

The sound card simply outputs a signal, which is then translated by the hardware it's connected to. In short, yes, that should be fine, provided they're a compatible set (most notably, the same Ohms).

or just dont connect one of the 3.5mm jacks from the 5.1 set, and connect the bose there. i suggest front L/R.

is it still possible to use the old front ones as the side or rear speakers?

Basically i am trying to ask are there any difference in the 3.5mm ports for the center,front,side or rear channels?

no, there is no difference. you can mix and match all you want. its far simpler than swapping the speakers and using the old amp.
