- Hi, i wonder what caused my motherboard to short?? I recently bought a new motherboard (ECS H77H2-M3), and i put everything into place, the ram, video card, fan etc. I used my old generic power supply and i thought it was still working because i had just been using it on my old pc before i upgraded. I put everything into the case, and when i plugged in power cable to the power supply unit, i started to smell smoke so i quickly removed the power cable. After a few seconds, i plugged it it again and around 3 seconds, there was a small metal on the lower right part (see pic below) that turned red and emitted smoke and a spark. I brought it to the shopp and explained what happened but they said they were too scared to test the motherboard. They told me it could be the old generic power supply that damaged my motherboard, good thing is that the new CPU that i had recently bought as well wasn't damaged at all. I wonder if my motherboard still works, i cannot see a single burn mark from where the spark started. Thanks
