Please help.

I own the MSI R9 280x GAMING 3G. I tried to find out wether my BIOS is up-to-date but can't make sense of the stuff google turned up. I looked here on techpowerup.com at the different BIOS offered, but don't know which is the right one.

GPU-Z says the BIOS version is 015.042.000.000.003435(113-C3865000-O77)
I attached a screenshot.

I also attached the BIOS itself (I read somewhere what GPU-Z displays as the BIOS version isn't helpfull when determining it's up-to-dateness).

The reason for all this is that the card gets pretty hot, and supposedly updating the BIOS on the MSI R9 280x can fix this.

If you need additional information please ask. Thanks in advance for any help, I'm pretty lost (and just want the damn thing to cool down)

PS.: Does it matter if I run it with the legacy BIOS or the UEFI? Currently the switch on the card is on legacy BIOS.

Hi

Welcome to TPU

In regard to heat I would check the systems air flow and use MSI Afterburner software to create a better fan profile. If still concerned with heat from card contact MSI Tech Support.

Unless there is an issue with the vga card flashing the bios should not be necessary and is not required. On occasions vbios image updates are provided by the manufacturer on there web page here [relating but not limited to memory timing tweaks; fan profiles]

If have not done so Make a backup of the Original Vbios Image; use GPU-Z v0.7.8 available - here
Example

GPU-Z Bios Image.jpg
Select Folder Icon/ Save to File [allocate a file name and **keep this copy in a safe place**]

Note: Download and run MSI Live update to ascertain if there is a vbios image update. If there is no updated vbios available there is no reason to flash the vga card.

Note: UEFI GOP is only required when using Windows 8.1 fast boot feature; and is only available when UEFI motherboard, vga card requirements are met.

If get a chance go here fill in full system specs hardware manufacturer, model numbers, case and OS

Ok, thanks for your answer. The thing is - I am already using Afterburner, and with 100% fan speed it gets up to 90 C° while gaming, not even some stress test benchmark. Air flow in my case shouldn't be too bad, certainly not as bad as to drive up the temps that much. Nonetheless I will get some additional case fans and hope that helps. I will also contact MSI, and if they can't help me I will replace the thermal compound as a last resort.

try limiting the fps; go to MSI AB On Screen Display Tab; Select "More" use RivaTuner Statistics Server

Air flow in my case shouldn't be too bad, certainly not as bad as to drive up the temps that much.
TBH airflow in that case look confused; just make sure the air flows in one direction so in from the front, bottom of the case and side panel and out from the rear and top

Nonetheless I will get some additional case fans and hope that helps.
Looking at the price of quality fans it may be wiser to invest in a case with better air flow; **If the vga card is not found to be at fault. [run the system with the side panel off and see if the temps go down] point a fan at the vga card.

I will also contact MSI
See what they say; they may swap the card out if the temps persist

if they can't help me I will replace the thermal compound as a last resort.
keep in mind this will invalidate any warranty
