Kudos to MSI for a nice TIM job!

I straightened out the thermal pad

Just these screws to remove the cooler. 10 in total, 4 that holds the fans/shroud on. 2 on the back end of the gpu and 4 for the gpu :peace:

The amount of tim I used (ICD24K) :fear:

Remounted and took apart to see how it spread! :pimp:

is it just me who thinks it is funny he rates the icd7 and 24 different for application when they are both the same thing?
Hell if I know, all I know is some HATE the ICD and some love it.
I use it because it works, It's a one shot deal... apply it and forget it.
I also use AS5 but not on a gpu.. wouldn't wanna short out anything but on cpus its fine and I really don't see any difference in cpu temps using one to the other.

But put to much on where it bleeds onto the tiny transistors and shit happens.

There is some truth behind this. ;)

I used to use AC5 on gpus but now I stick to my MX2 after a dead 7970.

Brad, thats a sexy gpu core! The tim of wasn't that bad tbh, much better than others I have seen, but good job n cleaning it up.

I went and checked the ICD paste on the gpu's and I ended up removing it. Ran way to high on both gpu's. They were hitting 94C @1007/1250 in valley

I cleaned them up and put AS5 on both of them , yeah i know but it worked, ......worked Really frigging well.

Same run and look at the max temps vs the 94c on the other paste.

also the AS5 need's a few hundred hours of cycled load, to no load to help align the silver particles.

EDIT: look at the Vrm's on both card's! Im mot complaining!

Sorry reverse the bottom two. Right is card #1

just a shame you did not?

sorry had to xD

best way to use icd is to preheat it so it spreads well on contact.

I am having issues with the amount of heat the MSI R9 290 dumps into the case, as with a lot of people. The biggest issue I have is that my watercooler radiator is now sucking in all the hot air off the video card. Would a blower style fan placed directly above the video card help?

If you place it above it wouldnt make much difference...
it depends where your radiator is, if its on the door then you have a problem, if not, just put a couple of fans on the door and i think your problem will be solved :)

Already have 2 intake fans on the window, 1 intake at the front, 1 exhaust on top, then the radiator at the rear in a push/pull.

Very frustrating!

You mean the window fans? I would only have one intake then though. What total fan configuration should I use then?
Make the radiator fan an intake

It is recommended by most company's that make the closed loop water coolers to draw outside air through the rad and into the case, not system warmed air out :)

Hello, techpowerup.
Got mine R9 290X 4G Gaming.
There is one thing that scares me, VRM1 temperature, it goes to mountain high in BF4, (not sure about the others, BF4 is the only game i currently play) and also noticed VRM temp bumps in Heaven 4.0 and Valley 1.0 benchmarks. Usually it about 110 C, absolute maximum is 118 C.
Tried different bioses and drivers, had no luck.
Running fans at 100% all the time does help, but not much only 4-5C lower.
How to deal with it? These temps are dangerous, right?

Back to my problem.
I know what is wrong with my card. MSI forgot to put thermal pad on.. I can see the light coming from the gap between heatsink and the mosfets.
Got another one problem. Usually it runs hot, but fine, no black screens, no artefacts e.t.c. But sometimes (rarely) there is no memory clock boost under load it remains on idle (300 MHz). IDK if it's related to VRM1 temperature somehow.

Intake on the door panel? Your gpu will blow against the window. Flip the fans around and have them pull the air straight out of the case and problem solved. I have my radiator on the top blowing the case air through the rad and out the top of the case, I single 120mm fan exhausting out the rear and a 200mm front intake blowing into the case. CPU temps are fine but only raised by about 2-3c.
I have set a single corsair HF 120 mm on the rear end of the cards blowing air coming off the front 200mm fan onto the end of the cards and the rear fan draws out the heat.. You can also use the noctua 140mm that fits a 120mm hole pattern and they work really well. They are quiet and do draw a lot of air over a 120mm by far.
