Upgrade what? If you want to add, tri-SLI (last I looked into) didn't have that great of a performance boost when compared to dual SLI. I would just pick up a second 980 and see how things perform.

You already pretty much have the latest in PC tech, not sure if bragging or what... I wanted to suggest SLI but it seems you have in mind 3 GTX 980+ 3 monitors, if you have money to burn hell go X99 and more ram(I dont know what you will do with more than 16GB of ram or even if you need that much but I guess still an upgrade non the less).

I'm sory, I was thinking of going with x99mb and 5930k with 16bg ddr4 with 2 gtx 980's but if my current build plus 1 more gtx 980 will be fine for triple asus g sync monitors then that is good news to my wallet :)

I should have said I'm really new to this stuff, not trying to brag at all, I'm just concerned what it takes to run 3 of these monitors in surround with no issues

Think of it like cooking. Once you add something to the mix, you can't remove it. In your case, if you pick up 3 980s, you can't really just return one if you don't need it. So start with 2 in SLI and see how they perform. If needs be, add a third after that point.

If you have 3 monitors the CPU is of 0 concern. The only problem I can see is that you can't run SLI on the MB you have now so you need to get one with 3 PCI-e X8 slots. The cheapest board I know that can run tri SLI with a 4770K is the Z97X-SOC Force from Gigabyte.

Well, you're obviously interested in something really special since you're willing to spend $2,400 on monitors. Hopefully someone will come along that has run 3 WQHD monitors and advise you on what it will take GPU wise. You're going to be pushing over 11 million pixels on monitors that are capable of displaying up to 144 Hz. I'm not sure if 3 GTX 980s is enough because with the 3rd card you don't gain as much performance increase percentage as when you add the second card. TBH if I were going to do what you are planning I would wait until next year when the GM210 full chip overclocked comes out and get a pair of those and do a Skylake CPU build. Get a 3rd GM210 if you have too.
