I have just about had it with the loud stock cooler that comes with my X1900XT. I have decided on getting the ZALMAN VF-700 for its good cooling of the gpu and memory and because of its lower sound. Which version should I get? The copper or aluminum? Which cools better? Also, should I replace the thermal paste that comes with the VF-700? Thanks!

Why not get the Zalman VF-900? Its defanitly better then the VF-700 but the primary con is the price, which is about 50 Dollars US. But if you don't want that, get the VF-700Cu version. From what I have seen in reviews, the VF-900 it is defantely worth the money you are paying for, and its quieter too, even in full speed.

And get Arctic Silver Creamque Thermal compund for the GPU. It is non-conductive and it will be better than stock paste from anywhere.

Save up for the VF900 if you can wait, but I have the VF-700Cu on my 9800 Pro 256mb card(I know it does not produce heat like your X1900XT). I could get 9800 XT speeds with the stock thermal paste, but with AS5 i could get about 15 mhz more on both memory and core. Get the Arctic Céramique(sp?) Thermal compound, like Cybie stated, because it doesn't conduct electricity like Arctic Silver does, so then it won't ruin your $400+ video card:roll:.

and save up for a couple of extra case fans to get rid of the ton of heat the zalman will now dump in your case..

the stock cooler might be noisy but it dosnt act as case heater like the zalman will..

don't use ceramique...its not meant for long term use and something bad will happen to your card lol. Accelero X2. It's $30 and works WONDERS for X1800/X1900. Stock thermal compound is MX1, which is almost as good if not better then AS5, especially on Arctic Cooling's Coolers.

as5 won't damage your cpu if you don't spread it over everything

mx1 is best for arctic cooling solutions

ceramique isn't for long term

liquid metal is the best(be more carefull than you would with as5)

If I get the Accelero X2, do I need to still buy memory heatsinks?

no i think it covers them.. on the 1800 and 1900 cards everthing is on the same side.. but as i said earlier make sure u have good case cooling.. the small print on the accelero says it is designed to go in a BX style case.. which is how they justify dumped all the heat straight into the case.. with a cooking hot card like the x1900 i wouldnt touch one with a barge pole..

i am waithing for them to come out with a designed similar to the old ones that pumps the heat outside the case..

most folks dont seem to care but i do..

Actually, AS5 isn't that conductive. It is IF you put too much on transistors, etc. I actually tried it on my XL's transistors(my ONLY card!!) and it didn't damage it at all. Just don't put too much. Probably about a rice grain in the middle and DON'T spread it. Just let the force of the HSF spread it.

i would spread it.. the secret is to not put too much on.. just enough to cover the surface thinly when spread.. if it gloops over the sides u have used too much..

it needs a few goes to get it right..
