Hello Chums

i am trying to find a low profile ( Shuttle style or size) which is preferably modular as i dont want to have to deal with unnecessary cabling.

1. must have 24 pin and 2 x4 mobo pins
2. doesnt need to run a gpu
3. only needs to be 250 w (ish) larger would be better but it will only run a 80w CPU a HDD and a few fans.

any ideas please, my internet search is driving me nuts so if anybody can point me in the right direction i would be grateful.

:toast:

this is why..........

Saying Shuttle power supply doesn't really tell us what you want. Shuttle makes many.

http://www.atxpowersupplies.com/shuttle-power-supplies.php

You mean a TFX? What do you want it to fit?

I meant in size/ shape, i want it to be low profile. it will go in a case that i am building (shuttle psu,s are about 35mm deep which is ideal)

I have a 3 Shuttle psu, s none of which have 24 pin and 2x4 mobo. and the surfeit of cables will cause space issues hence the modular route.

Hypothetically....
if i was to buy a non modular type, how difficult/dangerous/stupid would it be to cut and cap off any cables that i dont need. It is a ghetto build but i dont want to blow anything up .
I am very wary of tinkering with PSU's, the most i have done is replace a fan.

@ne6togadno .......what an awesome looking peice of kit. Maybe not entirely suitable on first inspection but definitely food for thought.:toast:

Are you building a custom case from scratch, or is this a modified case, or what? Cases are designed to support specific power supplies so if we knew more about the case (ATX, µATX, ITX, etc.) we could provide better advice about the PSU.

It is doable but I don't believe it would look like professional cable management. While lots of spare cables can look messy and impact cooling, proper "dressing" (routing and tying back) of spare cables does present a professional appearance and minimize impact on cooling.

And what if your requirements change in a year? This would require you carefully label both the PSU side and cut cable side in case you need to splice a cable back together. And to do that, you would have to leave several inches of cable hanging out of the PSU - contributing to your clutter mess anyway. And say you left 8 - 10 inches (I would not go less), these cable stubs would be hard to tie out of the way. Several of those cables have lots of wires in them making the splice look ugly - unless you put connectors on the cut ends and that would be a whole nother story.

I would not recommend cutting the cables.

Perhaps i should have elaborated with my original post @Bill_Bright

I intend to build my own case for ThugXeon, a cheap, purpose built cruncher. I have previous experience of case building and other projects.
To continue the "thuggish" theme the case is likely to be made from treadplate. (appropriately earthed of course)

I want to minimize the size of the case hence the need for a small psu and i really dont want to have to deal with cables which i will never use. I cant foresee any future mods to the rig as it is a one off cruncher.

it only needs to supply

1. 1 x 24 pin
2. 2 x 4 pin mobo supply
3. 1 x SATA for hdd
4. 1 or 2 molex and when i modify my fan inventory these will probably not be needed as i have 6/7 fan headers on the mobo
Supermicro X8STi

i did mention cutting and capping off surplus cables as i could confidently tackle that though i would prefer not to.

Another option would be to get a PSU from a SFF computer such as a fairly new Dell or similar and de-solder the unnecessary cables, although I would simply cut and cap them.

Thankyou,

@dorsetknob has been leading me down the same route and it does appear to be a nice, cheap and sensible option. (only about £ 15.00 ebay)

@ne6togadno 's suggestion is very tempting but lacking the 2 x 4 mobo supply. I considered contacting them though i think a bespoke solution from minibox would be too expensive.

you have one 4pin connector. you can use molex to 2x4pin adapter or you can use extra pata/sdata header and make yourself 2nd 4pin connector.
minibox have resellers in eu (if i remember well in uk too).

I have an oldish PSU kicking around that's kinda low profile... Came with some custom case from yesteryear. It's from before the 80plus standard so it probably isn't very efficinent but it's ATX and 250W rated. Can you give approximate dimensions since you are making this and I'll check if it fits within those specs. If it does, I'll post photos. It's old and I can't guarantee it's quality but it'd be cheap. Plus it never gave me any trouble...

Oh wait, you are in the UK... that'd be $30 just to get even a tiny thing over to you. Probably eliminates it as an option even with my asking price (I'd ask about $15).

Yeah forget it, this little guy appears to be 120V only. Plug it in on the other side of the pond and you'll likely have a version of the 4th of July Firecracker rather than a PSU.

@thebluebumblebee Shuttle size and shape is pretty much ideal for this build. 200 x 82 x 53 mm (LWH) though like others have suggested something out of a prebuilt will probably be my answer.
Perhaps a suitable Shuttle one will come up on ebay.
Those micro psu type might well come in handy down the road though, i will definitely watch for a similar case coming up. :toast:
