So I need a new phone, pretty much. And I don't have much money at all and a million things I need more than a phone, so I'm pretty much locked to whatever my carrier has. The choices I can afford are:

Sony Xperia E3
M4 Aqua
Z3 Compact

Samsung Galaxy Ace 4
A3 16GB
A5 16GB
S5 Mini

Microsoft Lumia 640 LTE (the only Lumia they carry)

The ones in bold are the interesting ones. The A5 looks interesting, but I worry about the speed. According to the Techspot review it should be about 20% faster than the CPU in my current, hateful, Galaxy Express, but it does have four cores instead of two. The S5 mini I'm not that interested in, but it's within range.

The Z3 Compact looks good, but I really really love OLED displays, and that hasn't got one. Also it's not certain I can actually afford it... Well I probably can but I don't know if it's worth it.

What do you think?

Is the S4 too expensive? I can recommend Samsung at least, have always used their phones (S4 now) and have always been satisfied. Like you said, Samsung screens are gorgeous.
I don't know much about the other phones, but I've heard good stuff about the Xperia Zx series.
Also, if you're going to buy a cover, a big selling point that other brands have versus Samsung, the looks, won't matter that much anymore. I don't know how much you care about looks though.

Edit: does the S5 mini have 16GB? Cos you don't want less than that.

From those listed I would probably go with the Z3 compact, it would be the fastest of all, it has a 2.5Ghz quad core and comes with a 20.7 MP camera.

You expect people to read! How naive. I'd go with the Sony Z3. Brother has one I think, nice little phone.

I have the S3 mini, biggest plus I can point (apart from price): there is an insane support from CyanogenMod community. I am running 4.4.5 Kit-Kat, but there's a ROM for 5.0.1 Lolipop. Every two days a new update. I think the S5 Mini will work for you pretty nicely in the long run if you pick it up. (long after Samsung seizes support for it, if you tend to change your phone rarely that is). I don't know why people are so prejudiced about it.

Was thinking about that too, but the Z3 Compact has the same internals as the Z3, so it's should be popular with that crowd, and they've released lots of builds the past months. It's lots faster as well, the only thing I'd miss would be an OLED screen.

Why? Can't you switch carriers? Or go with a pre-paid or buy a cheap phone and go with Straight-talk or Cricket? If the budget is tight, there generally are several options that are considerably cheaper than going with a regular carrier. And most carriers will give you a good discount deal (for 1 year anyway) if you change carriers.

What do you think?
I think you have failed to provide the most critical piece of information. :( What do you use your phone for? Do you live on it? Or do you use it only occasionally? Do you surf the Internet all day, or only use it for texts and, what are those things called? Oh yeah, phone calls! ;)

@Bill_Bright I'm sick of dirt cheap phones, and as places I frequently visit are deep in the woods I have the choice of two carriers. And the carrier I'm on now has good pricing anyway. I do with my phone more and more, except gaming, even the occasional remote desktop. If all I did was texting and phoning I wouldn't even consider changing phones, but I grow more and more reliant on it because I move about more and more, and frankly phones are super capable. If I want the entire package (a new phone that doesn't suck and a few jiggabytes of data) my current carrier is the cheapest one and that is essentially my selection of phones. I could get it a lot cheaper with the other carrier with the best cover (actually it's my current carrier that uses the other ones network), if I could do with 100MB of data, which I cannot.

I was in the same situation last month and decided to move from android; I went for Lumia 640 LTE and couldn't be happier, very good value for money.

and frankly phones are super capable.
And sadly, because of that, they are leading to the decline of the PC. :(

I note most carriers offer excellent phones for free or close to that if you are willing to obligate yourself to a 2 year contract. Perhaps if you told us your ISP, we could be more specific.

BTW, I am not a heavy cell phone user, but I do want my phone to do everything. I recently went with the S4 Mini and really like it. It only came with 8Gb of internal memory but you can easily add up to 64Gb. Note GSM Arena is an excellent site to review specs and compare phones.

I wanted the "mini" because I feel too many of today's full size smartphones are like lugging around tablets. And I didn't want a tablet, I wanted something that would easily fit in my pocket. And besides, I think they look silly holding them up to your head! ;)

2 years is standard, and the only phone you'll get included (unless your need of a phone coincides with random drive from a carrier) are the cheap ones. It's just the way things are here.

@claylomax I can get the Lumia 640 included in the contract, but that would sting because a 735 (which is the phone I really want) is only €35ish more but my carrier doesn't have it and I can only buy it if I set up a payment plan which usually gets expensive and then I'll have ANOTHER thing that costs me a couple dozens euros.

Having little money sucks.

Sorry to hear that; you're a down to earth person.
I'm shocked at how some of friends buy Iphones 6 for £700 or go for contracts on £40 a month and no, they don't have much money.

So I tried my hand at changing the glass on the screen, and well ... it was a valuable experience. The time between when the glue is hot enough and when the screen miscolors is, I think, less than a second. It works though, it just has some ungainly splotches on it. Also it has no glass at all now, because it turns out the new one I bought ages ago had broken during its "careful" storage in one of my "crap I shouldn't imagine I might need" drawer.

The phone works though, and I gained +1 in phone repair.

S5 mini would be my choice, I have an s4 mini with 16gb storage and a 32 GB SD card. It works great for what I need it to, its main use is to play music with my creative evo zr headset. The minis are actually very capable phonse and the hardware inside isn't shitty just because its a smaller version.
