New router and crap WIFI speeds

Ive just been and bought a new router (asus N55U) i was running a crappy talktalk router that kept getting hot and cutting out and was getting worse.

Im running my maximusVformulas onboard wifi dongles, with wifi suite. broadcom 802 adapter.

my average download speed on steam was around 1.5mbps but now its around 120kbs

my ping on an american server was around 100 and now around 400-1,000

whats happened? the new router is meant to be dual band 2.4+5ghz etc!

my signal is full, the router is around 4 metres away!

Check for congestion using inSSIDer or netsurveyor. Configure router to use a non congested channel. See if that helps.

Do you have a phone? Download some wifi scan, and see the channel densitiy... how many neighbors are sitting around?

yes i have a phone, i live in a medium sized block of flats so have many wifi neighbours


also last night i messed around with the settings it seemed to help but within a minute the ping creeps up to a 1,000 or so!

what phone do you got? if it's android you can get scanner but any other mobile OS you can't they dont have any on winphone and apple dont allow them

so i got installed on my android - wifi analyzer. And on my PC i have netsurveyor.

what sort of things am i looking for and what can i try?

Dunno if this is too obvious, but try speedtest on your phone.

Just tried my PC through wireless and it wont connect!!

Through cable it's a touch faster than that!

my wifi card aslo is 2.4 and 5ghz, is there any way i could run a bridge or independent 5ghz connection?

The first thing I would do is flash to the most recent Firmware Version 3.0.0.4.374.4422.

After setting up for both bands: 1(SSID name and 2(WPA2-PSK as AES
then set up router login password
then set up time zone
then set time server to: tock.usno.navy.mil
then look for what bands / channels your wireless is set to broadcast in. You need to select all channels that's why your capped at 58mbps per your screenshot 1st post.
somewhere in the settings for each band should be what channels are selected.
Download the Manual and look at page 33(PDF), try clicking on the tabs for each band and try clicking the bands in green near the top.

The Manual seems incomplete / crude / basic.

Page 23(PDF) shows at bottom right "more config...", try there. There are 2 tabs, one for each band.

When you are done, be sure to save router settings to computer for backup. Look on Left side Administration Tab.

Probably not the issue if your phone is working fine, but if you use WEP or WPA-TKIP encryption, it'll downgrade your connection to "G" speeds.... those encryptions are not supported by the 'N' standards.

i lost my patience with it and bought a splitter and 5metres of LAN cable.

Whatever i tried seemed to speed up all the other wifis apart from mine!


this has provoked me to learn about networks tho!

set your routers wifi channel to 1,2,6,9, and see if there is a change, possibly those built in wifi adapters are worthless junk(value add crap) and who is your Internet Provider (ATT ADSL-ATM or IPDSLAM, VDSL(Uverse)) or Verizon (ADSL) or Comcast?

my internet provider is talktalk. i may contact virgin and see about their fibreoptic broadband

Within the channel selection field should be a setting for 20/40 for the 2.4ghz band and 80 for the 5ghz band.
For N speeds you need to select both the 20 and 40. The selections should be 20 or 40 or both.
Set for 20 and 40.
If it's on 20 only that will cap your speed.

Have you looked at the Adapter settings? It could be that is set to 20 and not AUTO.
Are the Broadcom Adapter drivers up to date?

Also see page 31(PDF) for EZQoS. Have QoS enabled.

???When you replaced the old ADSL combo unit is it possible that you need to contact TalkTalk to register the new device. It could be they capped your service due to an unrecognized device on their system.

Not necessarily js. Using 40Mhz mode uses two channels, the 2nd channel overlaps with others decreasing your network performance as well as the others due to interference from/to the 2nd channel it bonds to.

40Mhz is only good if the environment is not congested.

If you want N speeds capped at 150 then select 20.
If you want full N 300 speed then select 20 and 40.

You need to be in a neighborhood already capable of fttp. With cat5 wiring(newer homes)
