Western Digital releases its largest hard disk drive that utilizes 100GB platters – WD Caviar SE 400GB. The new Cavier will perform better than other hard drives according to the manufacturer words. Specifications for the new drive are: 400GB space, Serial ATA-150 interface, 7200rpm motor, 16MB cache, 8.9ms read seek time, 10.9ms write seek time and 4.20ms average latency. WD Caviar drive noise levels are reduced to “be virtually imperceptible” to the human ear with its WhisperDrive technology. The eventual price is $279 for WD Caviar SE16 400GB + 3 year warranty.

Hard drive prices have gotten a lot better in recent years. Picked up a 160 Gb western digital Caviar SE SATA150 for $90 last march.
