Hi since getting my new case the phantom 410 I am over the moon with how quiet it is compared to my last one except when I play games and my graphics card kicks in it is very noisy on auto or at 50% it is an MSI 7970 Twin Frozr III/OC Boost Edition, it actually whines, I looket at an artic cooler but they are about £70 and even though they are good all the heat is dumped inside the case. I was looking at the AMD R9 290 cards is there still a problem with them and does anyone know of any quiet ones.

Gigabyte Windforce versions of the R9 290 are good options for quietness if you are after the R9 290. Maybe you might be getting a weird vibration in the new case causing some kind of whine. You might want to check that out first before spending a heap of money on a new card or cooler.

Hi THE EGG, I have decided against the cooler and the card was noisy and whining in the last case in fact it has been since I got it early last year.

The phantom 410 was not designed to be a "quiet" case. I'm glad to hear that you're thrilled with it, but there are much better choices for a quieter case.
IMHO, you have 3 choices:
* Get a different GPU. (Make sure to check w1zzard's reviews for fan noise readings)
* Get a different case. Define R4, Nanoxia Deep Silence 4, as well as a whole host of other cases.
* Uses Afterburner and down-clock and/or down-volt and/or adjust the fan profiles (while keeping the card's temps in the safe zone)

Okay, 4th option. Invent an active noise blocker for PC's

I bought the phantom 410 for cooling and room and with every fan space filled I don't mind the noise but as soon as I play a game the gpu cuts in and is way above the case fan noise, I think it might be a new graphics card as I said I quite fancy the R9 290 it's within budget range but what one

Is your 7970 TF III overheating? Those coolers are usually pretty quiet on Auto. MSI TF III cards do have a tendency to have the TIM fail*, which will send the fans to max due to high core temps.
*happened to the TF III cooler on my 6870 Hawk

If this is the case then a redo of the TIM with MX2/MX4 paste will get the card quiet again

Theres such a thing in this world as sound dampening foam made for PCs. It can be a little pricey though

I've always wondered what an application of vehicle undercoating to a case would do? link Neatly done to the inside, not just slobbered on the outside.

In Call of Duty Ghosts with the fans set at 50% using MSI Afterburner they run at 72-74c

thats more messy, hence why people dont do it. Ive heard of noise dampening foam inside case but never vehicle undercoating

Good roundup, I'd go the Gigabyte one as I believe it is quietest ( I value noise level quite highly). But I think the Sapphire one will have the best performance. I'd skip the XFX one though, although it is sexy to look at.

keep your current card and replace the thermal compound on it, and ensure all screws are screwed down, (Might have to get a plastic washer to ensure your cooler sits properly on the GPU) And Clean Your fans!!!

Hi fans are kept clean is there anything I can spray the fans with ie WD40 was suggested to me but I don't know whether to believe the person or not, do you have the link for w1zzard's reviews for fan noise readings as I can't find it.

DO NOT use WD40 on fans, It IS a lubricant but first and foremost it is a liquid displacer. use something like 3in1 oil or at least sowing machine oil

made up my mind going to go for a new card R9 290 either the Gigabyte or the Sapphire and then strip down the other one and see if I can do anything with it and maybe sell it or give it to my daughter who seems to get all my PC castoffs maybe that is why she encourages me to get new stuff, so its either the

any opinions.
I'd choose the Gigabyte one as I know the cooler that it is fitted with is a BEAST. Super quiet and very cool. But for outright performance the Sapphire would most likely be the better card.

I really dont think you should upgrade from a 7970 to a 290,especially for 1200p,just set your own fan curve in afterburner.

Hi does anyone have the saffire I have heard it is pretty quiet as well
I had a quick look at some reviews and unfortunately I can't find any direct comparisons with the Gigabyte and Sapphire cards but it looks like the Sapphire R9 290 tri-x is about on par noise level as the Asus R9 280X DCII (which I have 2 of and I find them pretty quiet). If left on auto-fan while gaming I can't tell the difference between the Asus and a Gigabyte card with windforce cooler. And it looks like the Sapphire is just as cool as the gigabyte windforce one too. So I think if you choose either of the 2, you will have a beast card. :)

EDIT: nevermind, I found this; http://www.kitguru.net/components/g...290-windforce-oc-review-1600p-ultra-hd-4k/29/
shows the sapphire and gigabyte noise levels. Extremely close results so either is a great choice :) If anything the Sapphire is better now I read that review.

Hope your right as I am seriously thinking on the Saffire, hopefully I will see some improvement on the graphics side.

i know a few with 290s and the dc 2 seems to be about the best in terms of noise/temps.

the sapphire, msi and gigabtye ones are either quiet or cool, while it is in the middle with both.

Im in the same situation as you are now, and ive desided for the Sappire R9 290, after reading a ton of reviews both in term of noise and also preformance. I will get mine just here after easter, proberbly on wensday so then its time to see for myself.
