Nvidia 8500/8600 Series Overclocking and Feedback thread

Okay, first I need to replace the stock paste with some arctic silver 5. I am all out but will try to pick some up in the next day or too. That should allow me to up it some more. I don't want to set the fan all the way up because I like to keep my pc on the quieter side.

aftermarket cooler ftw, they cool way better and waaaay quieter in general, i'm lucky my 8600gt's aren't a reference pcb, and have Zalman VF700-Al's on em stock, which means even at 100% the fan's noise increase is indistinguishable from slow moving 120mm fans, and i havent ever seen temps over 65 degrees c

i'd reccommend them as an ample cooler for the 8600 series, and they can be had at 20-25$ USD i believe, its not the beefyest tho so if you plan on reusing the cooler on a latter card then maybe go something better.

Yeah, I plan on replacing the stock cooling in the next month or too, especially since the video card is the loudest thing in my system.

It would match my arctic freezer 64 pro I just bought. The next upgrade on my list though is to pick up an Athlon x2 5000 black edition.

hey also lap the cooler or core if you want to go that far it will well in my case it dropped my idle like 4ºC and my max load has plummited by like 13ºC

got a link to a lapping guide? id like to lap my 8800GT's core the 2 8600's and my core 2 duo, and all of their coolers too, then go as5 on em, should be a nice tweak to the whole system in one go.

i really wish i another 8600 i would so love to sli them...do you know were to get an sli bridge wolf? im really interested in doing it but iv looked on newegg and cant seem to find them...and the cards im looking at dont come with one.

as for an sli bridge solaris, ebay definatly has them, short of that i got my floppy asus sli bridge with my P5N32-E SLi, but i have the feeling a few good comp stores around here would sell them for <20$ US, so you mite be able to get one over the counter.

sort of THAT, buy a SLi mobo, keep the SLi bridge and return it with a defect....

as to that lapping guide, can you lap the gpu itself? or does it need to have a shim on it, i have a feeling ima start rubbing away parts of the gpu...

idle shes probably around 45-50C idle with stock everything


thnx wolf im really in the market for another 8600 i just need to scrunge up the cash...and i want to sli.


and no you dont need a shim...i just kinda polish mine..its already pretty smooth so you go out and get your self some emery cloth and just polish it up...it doenst take enough away to require a shim but it smoothes it out enough to drop the degrees!

oh my bad with the 8400... i really did think you were lost and taking about an intel E8400.

cheers sol, ima go and get some sandpaper in the next few days and lap up the whole comp .....well anywhere where theres heat transfer.

as i remember the 8400gs is passively cooled, so it may get decently warm, but i dare say it would never ever be enough to worry about unless your going for big overclocks, which i hear the 8500GT/8400GS are damn good at actually.

i saw an article where they got one that was stock clocked at 460 core (up from 400) and they oc'ed it up to the + side of 750mhz....you mite wanna point a fan at it at that stage...

oh and @ sol, i really did enjoy 2 8600"s in SLi, theyre a good pair to start with if youve never done SLi before, and together with a nice o/c (which for you wont be a problem) they will chop a G80GTS/HD3850, ive had SLi 8600GT's @ 10,700 3dmarks. also you only need to be running upwards of about 1024x768 + 2xAA to start seeing huge benefits, like 60%+ framerates over single gpu config.

Its just the way the cooler is designed, there was no stock paste on the ram. I cut up an old socket a heatsink and tried to make little shims for the ram but I couldn't get enough pressure on the gpu because they were to tall. I guess I will just have to get a third party cooler. I am really liking the accelero s2 since it would only cost about $21. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186017
The accelero s1 seems a little better but is out of stock and newegg and costs more anyways. The only thing I am worried about is that if the s2 compatible with the a 38xx/8800, which I plan on upgrading to eventually.

I have a XFX 8600gt 256mb XXX edition clocked at 680/1700/980, just decided to post my results here before I buy my XFX 8800gt. Pretty impressive 3DMark 06' scores, I really want to meet the guy with over 8000.

lol, same card as me, and i got the xfx 8800gt too it was an awesome move and a great ocer, but ive scored 6939 on 06 with my 8600GT and with a crappyer processor too

i also would like to see the person scoreing 8000+ on an 8600GT, a quad core overclocked could get you to ~7500 and a vmod could take care of the rest.
