That isn't entirely true. The 6-pin only requires 2x12v wires, and 3xGround. Most good quality PSUs have 3x12v, because they are really 6+2 connectors, AKA 8-pin capable. The actual specification for the 6-pin actually says "no connection" for the middle 12v wire. You can see the pin-out here. The 8-pin on the other hand requires the middle 12v wire be there.

If he has a decent PSU, then using a 6-pin to 8-pin adapter is ok, but most PSUs that only have a single 6-pin aren't decent. So I wouldn't recommend it, and we can't even guarantee that the middle 12v wire is there on his PSU.

what is the best NVidia pci-e card that I can buy used for under $100? it doesn't matter how new or old the design architecture is as long as its going to play most of the newer games or at least play them on low settings.

yes this is NOT the system in my specs, this is a budget upgrade for a system with onboard video only right now.

the specs for the system this will be for is as follows:

mb - intel DH55TC
cpu - i5-650 3.20 GHz
system ram - 8gb
power supply - corsair cx430 @ 430 watt http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026&cm_re=corsair_cx430-_-17-139-026-_-Product

EVGA B Stock. 750ti FTW. Good little card, and fits under the budget you specified. I have one of these I use for a test bench....they run cool, quiet, and surprisingly well.

ok, I have been looking at the card suggestions so far and not liking the prices (I should have mentioned im trying NO?T to spend the entire $100 budget, that's just the breaking point number. anyway the red 7950 is well over $100 used and the 280 is at that $100 mark or just over, the same for the green 660, 670, 760 and 750 are at that $100 mark or just over but ...

what about a gtx 650? its like half price of the 750 @ only $50 new http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vamery-GTX-...301100?hash=item25b12cebac:g:BtwAAOSw3ydVzaiM

would that be "adequate to play "most" of todays games albeit not the most demanding?

Look at the brand. Those sneaky Chnese sell 650/750/770's that are actually GT230, 9600GT or worse. Just an old crap with modified vendor ID and some BIOS settings to match the original card. Some don't work in 3D at all.

The original GTX650 has 128-bit GDDR5 memory, while this crap is 256-bit DDR3 [???]

EDIT: In regards to a real GTX650 : still not worth it. Basically it's an equivalent of a newer GT730 with wider memory bus. Anything below GTX650Ti won't do.

ok so your saying I should shop for 660 or 670 in green and 7950 or 280 in red and that's what fits my budget and system specs best? (I would presume the 750 or 760 falls in there too)
GTX 660 Ti/GTX 670/GTX 760/GTX 960 all have about the same performance GTX660 vs GTX660 Ti vs GTX670 vs GTX760 vs GTX960 benchmarks
The GTX 650/750 have much lower performance - about 1/2.
would that be "adequate to play "most" of todays games albeit not the most demanding?
The reason that I'm trying to get you to spend the $100 on a GPU is that I think that you will quickly out grow a GTX x50, except for the GTX 950. World of Tanks recommends an i5-3330 and a GTX 660 or 7850.

I linked a 750ti FTW for $80 direct from EVGA. If you pass that up, when in need of a good GPU for less than $100, you're a fool.

Enjoy your shopping. lol

That thing loses its mind (can't output its power) over 30C...

Actually, it outputs its rated power just fine over 30°C, it just looses efficiency. JonnyGuru, IIRC, had the unit up to almost 40°C under full load, it just didn't meet 80+ Bronze anymore.

ok so your saying I should shop for 660 or 670 in green and 7950 or 280 in red and that's what fits my budget and system specs best? (I would presume the 750 or 760 falls in there too)

A 670 would be a good option, but really on the edge of what your PSU can handle. The problem with older cards is, yes can give better performance/$, but they give worse performance/watt. So while the 670 performs about the same as the 960, the 670 consumes about 40w more.

Easy enough to look..... /boggle

Sure, but it is wrong to just blindly recommend an adapter without knowing what PSU he has. It is also wrong to say 6-pin and 8-pin have the same 12v wires, as they might not.

It is just as easy to figure out what PSU he has, and then make recommendations. Had you done that, you would have found his PSU already has an 8-pin, and the adapter is unnecessary, and his PSU is also questionable for running anything beyond a GTX960.

$80 for one of the fastest GTX 750 Ti's is a decent deal, but spending $20 more for a card that's 40-50% faster is a better deal in the long run.

well im not completely against the idea but I just never liked the idea of buying an x50 series is because they were so weak compared to going with the x60 series for an average of $20-$25 more money

Well, if you want something like a 7950 or equivalent, your going to need a bigger PSU. However if you want a cheap good PSU, go for the EVGA Bronze 600B. A pretty good value if I do say so myself and will power anything (Minus Dual GPU's).

I would still consider just getting the GTX 960 or 760 if you want to save some green. Used you should be able to see one in your price range like the links from before.

Check the classifieds in your area (do not bother with bidding wars). I got a 660 ti for 60€ last week, surely you can find something similar, even a 660 would do. Stays well under the $100 budget, reasonable power draw (140W max I think), much better bang-for-the-buck than any new card, be it a 750 ti or a 960.

It's already been linked twice, but just in case: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/t...gtx670-vs-gtx760-vs-gtx960-benchmarks.219517/
