well even with what chips they've salvaged from the crappy yields, there should be a config of clocks, number of shaders, etc that works with the majority of the chips. its just a question of if that standard that works on the majority of the chips is worthy to be the first real GTX 3XX series chip. My guess is that they haven't been hence the delays, but i assume that they're finally getting enough chips that can do what they want them to do since everyone and everywhere is sayin a march release.

And then once they do release their top end, all these chips they've been salvaging will help supply the mid range line up when nvidia finally releases that.

EDIT:
Fermi sounds like the 8800GTX all over again, but without the performance crown.
did the 8800GTX also have yield problems at first and get delayed? i don't remember that...googling lol

The 8800GTX was a miracle. According to TPU's tests, it was one of the quietest high-end cards released in the last 4-5 years. Incredibly quiet if the ambient is a cool temperature.

Also, it was not any hotter than an X1900XTX. The heatsink was great, and the heat dissipation due to less dense silicon (lower voltage) with only about 10W more power consumption over an X1900XTX at max load, with about 75% performance increase-- the 8800GTX was a god-send.

About the Fermi, it's all speculation to this point!!! All GT300 discussions in every forum are up in the air!

lol i did actually just spend 27 minutes googling old 8800GTX threads. I forgot all the crazy rumors, like G80 just being a souped up 7900GTX chip with extra features to make it dx10; G80 being a dual core chip, and then i read what seemed like solid fact that ATI already had R600 ready and would release on time with vista. man lol kinda interesting to read back on all that BS speculation we did and do

but i did read G80 did get delayed and had actually undergone a re-design, i guess cause of dx10.

hmmm on topic comment.....one that hasn't been said....wouldn't everyone shit a cow if fermi performed at or below HD 5870 performance?

Ha ha, me, I'd poop a cow!!! Most of the well-sourced rumors put the estimate at 20% minimum over a 5870, and I still call that dangerous because ATI just might release a 5890. Maybe NV's just working so hard to make sure that it's gonna be 30-35% at least.

no, but it was hot, loud, huge, and expensive

That would make it a HD2900XT not a 8800GTX. It was hotter, louder and expensive for the performance it provided.

That's why I don't pay attention to all this BS we are hearing now. One "reliable source" is saying yields are 20%, another "reliable source" supposedly from TSMC reporting to a different site is saying yields are on the same bracket as Cypress, just a little bit lower. One source says it's 20% faster than HD5870, another says it's 8% faster than Hemlock. All of them are reliable sources that apparently have been very accurate in the past...

See how different the cards are viewed, based on performance alone - even if everything else about the cards suck?

Indeed, but it means the 'good' chips will be that much more expensive. The thing is, if fermi is 20% faster than a stock hd5870, there is really no reason for me to care, since my OC already add's around 10-15% performance anyway. Also, if fermi is as hot as rumoured, the overclocking potential will be negligible.

This is a video comparing GTX285 and GF100 based card in Far Cry 2.

Performance is in line with the most recent rumors. That is 20 to 30% faster than HD5870

http://vimeo.com/8754848

Around 75-80 fps for the Fermi, 45-50 fps for the GTX 285.

Not really, the 8800GTX was much quieter and cooler than the 2900XT. It produced a relatively unobrtusive hiss in idle. And the IQ was far superior than the 2900XT too.

I severely doubt that this will be the next 8800GTX, The glory of the 8800GTX was that nothing could touch it. If it had come out... say after the 3870's and the 3870X2, it wouldnt have been nearly as special as it was. That card was king of the hill for so unbelievably long.

About the vid - I was pretty dissapointed with that... I get very similar results with the 260 SLI :/ but that game is extremely platform dependant - my i5 gets 86fps avg and 56min wheras my e8500 got 56avg and 39 min.

I want those demos! I really wish they would of shown proof that fermi was really running Far Cry 2. :ohwell: Either way I believe this card will be faster than 5870 without a doubt. I would be concerned about how hot this card is going to get.

indeed, but it still has to beat it by at least 15% to make sure people like us just won't go 'screw the extra money, ima going to overclock'. Unless the fermi card overclocks like a beast on steroids, but heat rumours seem to negate that if they're true :( (even worse for me, because i like overclocking, so having hardly any headroom would make me just buy a second hd5870 instead of fermi.

According to the links that's a GTX360 that is being pitted against a GTX285. That falls within what I expected from the specs. If true then it's going to be like G92 vs RV670 all over again, the second fastest single GPU card being some 20% faster than AMD's fastest one and Nvidia would just have another card which is significantly faster. Just this time the GTX380 would be close or surpass AMD's X2 card, because this time the X2 is just 50% faster than the single GPU cards.

Those they must be running with at least 8x AA for the 285 to be getting such low frames...either that or the test systems are platform-bottlenecked.

Well, if the heat rumors are false I'll be kissing my 5850's goodbye! :) I wonder if they'll let us haggle a price for these cards?

Lol, i concur, if the heat rumours are false the card should be pretty awesome. I remember my good ol' nvidia 9500M GS and it's 70% shader / 25% core and 20% memory oc :) good times. Still, it will still need to decisively hit the hd5870 hard to make me go through the hassle of selling my hd5870 rather than just wait for the next series and then buy a second hd5870 for a pittance :) after all, thar be no dx12 on the horizon just yet.

Unless nvidia release an amazing card at £200, but alas, 'tis just a dream.

Tbh, one of the main reasons for me edging to nvidia if it is competitively priced would be for the far more mature 3d nvidia platform, sure it's more expensive at the moment, but i'm sure prices will come down fairly soon. I want 3d crysis dammit! (seriously, i would be happy to have a fixed 30fps on every game if it meant my current monitor could have 3d atm). And yes, it is because i watched Avatar.

Give a big ,big kiss to your 5850 & say goodbye to her & then give it to me for free , i'll paid shipping

Seriously you guys spend to much on a graphic cards i would never spend money on a graphic card for about +-10-15fps more (in most games) me i change only if the next card can beat mine by at less 50% & price under $200.00 :rockout: :D
Now that worth my money ;)

Every next generation card should beat the older one by 50% (twice as fast) , if not they should wait untill they do , but that just me..;)
