Of course it's "in the works". nVidia must think of something to get the halo effect from the HD5970.

i still think this may all be a bit trumped up. if fermi was really "unmanufacturable" nvidia would be pushing a whole new line of gt200 revision chips through its new naming scheme as the 3XX series. Being that fermi was originally rumored to be that series the marketing is already in place and they could sell a ton of cards to uninformed consumers.

We still aren't in march yet so I think I'll wait and see what goes down.

they pretty much are... slapped DX10.1 on top, and launched some low end cards that might as well be G92

Fermi Architecture GPUs Will Only “Hit the Full Stride” in Q2 – CEO of Nvidia.

Mass Availability of GeForce GTX 400, Other Fermi Products Delayed Till Q2
[02/18/2010 12:44 PM]
by Anton Shilov

Nvidia Corp. will finally start selling its highly-anticipated GeForce GTX 400-series graphics cards as well as other products based on the code-named Fermi architecture and GF100 (NV60, G300, GT300) graphics processing unit (GPU) in the first quarter of fiscal 2011, it looks like mass availability of appropriate products is only expected in Q2 of FY 2011.

“Q2 [of FY 2011] is going to be the quarter when Fermi is hitting the full stride. It will not just be one Fermi product, there will be a couple of Fermi products to span many different price ranges, but also the Fermi products will span GeForce Quadro and Tesla. So, we are going to be ramping now on Fermi architecture products through Q2 and we are building a lot of it. I am really excited about the upcoming launch of Fermi and I think it will more than offset the seasonality that we usually see in Q2,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, chief executive officer of Nvidia, during the most recent conference call with financial analysts.

Earlier the head of Nvidia said that the company would ramp up production of Fermi-based chips in Q1 FY2011. Nvidia’s first quarter of fiscal year 2011 began on the 31st of January, 2010, and will likely end on the 30th of April, 2010; the Q2 of FY 2011 will last from May till late July, 2010. At present many observers suggest that Nvidia will launch the GeForce GTX 470 and GTX 480 graphics cards in March or April, but it looks like the products will not be available in truly mass quantities right after the launch.

Nvidia’s chief executive officer did not provide any concrete timeframes for the transition of the whole lineup to the new Fermi architecture, but said that since the owners of mainstream and entry-level graphics cards hardly demand new functionality, it is not crucial for Nvidia to update currently available “fabulous” graphics chips. In addition, the speed of the transition depends on the supply of 40nm chips by TSMC.

“All of that just depends on 40 nm supply and we are trying to finesse it the best we possibly can. For the entry-level products, the truth is that the new architectures […] are probably not extremely well appreciated anyhow. People, who buy the new architectures, tend to be early adopters and they tend to be the game enthusiasts, workstation designers or creative artists or – there are very specific reasons why it really enhances their experience. Our current-generation GPUs are fabulous and all the things that mainstream consumers would use their computer for. […] I think the mainstream GPUs are really fabulous and has been enhanced recently with some really great features and so my sense is that they are going to continue to do quite nicely in the marketplace. Then we will just transition as fast as we can,” said Mr. Huang.

In the fourth quarter of FY 2010 Nvidia posted revenue of $982.5 million. Sales of GPUs accounted for 58.3% of sales, or $572.9 million.

If what some of the things on semiaccurate say are really true, I will never buy a product from Nvidia until their staff changes.

Nvidia is all about $$ right now... ATI is about $$ in the long run (keeping their customers)... many ATI loyals, not many Nvidias...

Most of Nvidia buyers either fall for their marketing, need to fold with their cards, want PhysX, or are in the in between camp and chose a nicely priced Nvidia card

But hey, none of you want that right? I finally gave up on this dream of theirs, and moved along to a card that performs. Really performs. really, really performs.

I played GTA4 at 100 draw distance last night, yes it stuttered a bit, but it looked amazing. Now I'm backingup my system and getting ready to do a full redeployment of 7 and a cleaned and reset loop.

looks like fiscal year to me, which means this summer.

Indeed, the article states:

Earlier the head of Nvidia said that the company would ramp up production of Fermi-based chips in Q1 FY2011. Nvidia’s first quarter of fiscal year 2011 began on the 31st of January, 2010, and will likely end on the 30th of April, 2010; the Q2 of FY 2011 will last from May till late July, 2010. At present many observers suggest that Nvidia will launch the GeForce GTX 470 and GTX 480 graphics cards in March or April, but it looks like the products will not be available in truly mass quantities right after the launch.

So we'll probably get a paper launch in March or April with more or less zero availability until May OR Nvidia just waits until May.

so late... and it looks like the 5xxx prices arent dropping anytime soon... :/ for me to upgrade would be to spend $300 on basically the same perf I have now.

I never thought my gtx 260s were gonna last this long lol...

So it's July now. Not surprised. It's ok though as it is now proven people will wait for it. Even if it does turn out to be a pretty bad product, people will want it. I wouldn't expect ATi's prices to lower at all when these two (TWO CARDS!) are released. Nvidia is truly having problems with these cards. I wonder why they haven't just scrapped the whole Fermi idea already. :ohwell:

I wonder why they haven't just scrapped the whole Fermi idea already. :ohwell:

Because consumer GPU market is just about a 15% of their revenues (EDIT: sorry, it's profits, not revenue), where as the professional market is about 35% and growing fast. And that's without the Tesla market, which is almost nonexitent nowadays (companies don't want them because current Teslas have no ECC or good 64bit support). Fermi has been architected to fullfill 3 markets from the beginning and when the GPGPU market flourishes (and it will) they will be in a very good position to double up revenues on their professional lineup.

As much as I like being a tech enthusiast, sometimes you just have to understand that we are just a very tiny portion of the market and we can't expect companies to take decisions to our benefit. And I don't see them saying July will be the launch. They are saying that it's not until July when we are going to see them in high numbers, It's a July release as much as (and to the same extent) the HD5xxx has had a January release.

On another note, TBH I don't know why the thread has been opened anyway, since I don't see any new info. We knew that Fermi was going to be launched around March 2010 or Q1 fiscal year 2011 since it didn't make it to the November release date. Nothing has changed since then at all, but every 2 weeks or so we see the same thing, just that it was written in a different place and we see 2 pages of the same reactions that already happened like 10 times in this thread, confusion with fiscal year 2011 included (omg it's late, 2011!! - no, it's fiscal year... bla bla rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat).

So you expect to see something new when you enter and you end up seing the same thing all over again for the 10th time... I thought it was closed because of that reason TBH, that's why I say it.

good god buzz killington... This thread is for the time when it gets close to release and we start seeing new information FINALLY.

But I do agree on the first part of what you said, about the enthusiast vs. professional market, before you got your panties in a wad.

I can't say I disagree with you. We should start a website and make some bold accusations about graphics card companies. We'd be all over the webz!

did u read the link that re-opened this thread? bout Fermi being unmanufacturable? a complete fail? that's why i asked for it to be reopened, to see what others thought of it. I personally had never heard that, i had heard it was going to be hard but nvidia would make it, that however was recently(3days old?) posted and stated fermi to never come with alot of facts/bs to back it up.

that's why it was re-opened.
