Great review, I was looking at 2 others before I saw this one, most of their tests were run at 20XX res with only 3 or 4 games, I wonder why? I'll leave you all to guess, this one as ever is very thorough, completely un-biased and for TPU members who follow all of W1z's reviews, an easy ready reference and comparison to all the other GPU reviews.

Now many people can request that he does different things or uses different games or uses different drivers etc etc, damn lets all start a thread on what colour underwear he should wear next time he does one.... ffs be happy it's un-biased and honest, there are fewer and fewer sites that genuinly give completely un-biased reviews, let's not lose the best of them! Kind of reminds me of my oldest daughter's 18th Birthday, i gave her £2000 to buy her first car, she gave me a hard time because she thought she was getting £3000! In the end she didn't get the car..... I wonder why :D

Edit: If we do vote for a colour of underwear I'll go for Pink with green spots.

Nice, It's got the performance crown, I want one! :D

Thanks for another great review, W1zzard. :toast:

EDIT: Ok, taking a slightly longer look at it, I think I'd rather wait for the improved "GTX485" variant which will come with a die shrink and all 512 shaders enabled (hopefully). The GTX480 runs far too hot and noisy for my liking. My 285 doesn't make an irritating noise, even when worked hard and that's essential for me. I'd rather lose performance than put up with it.

Heck, I might even get one of the smaller variants coming out soon, if I want nvidia DX11 capability to play with.

lol DIE shrink.
look at all the problems they had now

don't do that wizz i really like your review, maybe this was the result after loong time never been a fanboy war and some ppl just feel enought and they just released what ever they got, and they want find something to blame of

I think performance between the 5870 and GTX480 are too close tbh.

Took a Large Core from NV to gain anything where AMD did it with a smaller core. Besides you can scale the AMD part higher. Beyond that Cooler, less power draw are a must in today's age when fuel prices are going up everywhere.

It's simple for me, I don't care for sides, I pay the bills so electricity useage is my problem, I'll knacker the wife's hairdryer and hide the food mixer to make up the bill.... however roughly a 10% performance gain across the board but more than 20% on price in the UK over the 5870 I am afraid IS fail for me.

thanx wizz for cat. 10.3 driver benches.

in other note, why didn't you test game that have native DX11(like : dirt2, battle forge, AVP, stalker CoP) support instead you use DX 9 path?

Wizard your reviews are great don't get caught up in bs dude keep at it. lol I don't care what drivers set u tested it was in the middle of a driver beta-release cycle (which is suddenly new for ati to go public on them for everyone guess they got tired of leaking so) Totally not your fault. They are looking for some showdown that wont happen for like 5 months-year
(driver gain by driver gain, which will be an even longer battle with these monster cards)
Don't cast stones at wizard for bringing you the news. And don't hate on Fermi is what it is.

(The sad part is you could of had a much cooler version of it a long time ago, and have been waiting for nothing :) ) burn.

I finaly have my answer, my next card will be a 5850. The performance per watt of these new Nvidia is just not acceptable for me. I really did not know what to expect here, but I wanted to wait and see how it would turn out. While I would have liked to see the 5850 prices drop a little bit more in that time period, I now know exactly what card I want.

These gtx 4XX cards are fast cards with a great set of features and all, but I want more efficiencie, as I do for my car and my snowmobile (Thank you Ski-doo for those clean and efficient e-tec and ACE engine)

Yes, why we're still getting copy/paste titles and results from engines that are several years old now, and end up with reviews where only one game(Crysis, no surprises there) makes the cards actually stress - I don't know, but at least we did get something relevant and useful this time around ... :

EDIT: @Mailman

It's a hell of a lot more relevant than ten+ games that run at 100+fps and tell us absolutely nothing about minimum frame rates. At least Metro 2033 is a current game, with current tech that the card(s) can make use of - and as I previously said, GTX performance will probably be on par with current 5XXX cards, but have the edge in some of the newer features from DX11. Which means, it's a single card solution that's competitive and stronger in the future proof department.

And you do understand all of those "old games" use engines that are still in use today in other games. Other than Metro show me one game that uses the same engine......yeah I thought so.

31.3 fps doesnt speak volumes about the game especially since it has nvidia written all over the box.

seems poorly unoptimized?

TBH THQ is not a big company pertaining to PC Gaming, they are mainly a budget org for Console games so to be that tells me this game is unoptimized for PC use, just as Midway is, UT3 wasn't as good as 2004 and 99.

I don't remember seeing any batman AA benches.. I probbaly overlooked but that title might be a good way to see relative performance across other nv cards.

Now that seems like a good point. However given its history "Batmanagate" people would go nuts if W1zz used it. Maybe just use it on Nvidia reviews? The games I would like to see are the following.

1. BC2 because of the HUGE following it has on TPU.
2. Anything that uses the Source Engine
3. The tech 5 engine when it hits the market.

The design doesn't matter to me really. Despite the fact that nvidia's core is rediculously huge I mean WTF huge the only thing that matters is that it has good performance/price ratio and runs at acceptable temps 95 degrees C and down and has decent power draw. However I don't see fermi as a fail as other but I certainly won't be getting one

If it wasn't for the limited cooling options the 5770s are fucking insane cards man

Mines currently keeping up with my old 4890 1gb : ]

I wish you never said that. I always dismissed the 5770 because I thought my 4890 was faster :(

The GTX480 is a great peice of tech. but its looking like a Beta version to me .... Overheating, noisy, but good perf out of the card.

Runing a 3SLI can pump 900Watts ++ under load just from the GPU ... Hope your AC is good ..

Ill wait until Nvidia can make Fermi the way its supposed to.
