Thanks to the SLI hack, pretty much any board can do SLI.;)

And the point is that if you aren't concidering dual-GTX580s or HD6870s, these cards won't be for you. They will consume too much power, and cost too much.

i am considering one or two

what are 8 pin connectors rated for again? i know the socket is good for 75w and 2 8 pins should give a rough max for the car

well while nvidia has thrown sanity out the window... why not make a driver for 8way sli while they're at it. (4 of the 590s)

i wonder if they've done a die shrink secretly? doubt it...

I think an 8pin can do 150w (edit: yep... i was right.) so that's 450 via 3 pci-e 8pin plus 75w on the slot... a total capable power of 525w available to the card... that's about 44A! you'd need a 1300watt psu to do sli with these (quad)

... or THIS

Cost is a none issue ( this time of year ), as for the getting 2 6870's is some thing i might actually get or even just a 6970.

Like everyone else we need to see what these cards will do already and IF the performance is great enough might just have me getting one regardless.

I hope they come up with a way for the card to use AC so it can plug straight into the wall...

Remember, the PCB shown in the article is not the reference PCB nVidia will be using. It is a sample for a dual GF100 card that never happened. So we don't know yet if it will used two 8-pins or not. And even still, the sample PCB in the article had spacing for both 8-pin or 6-pin connectors.

hehe yes lol. Love to to get the 6990 or even the 590 but it's the power usage thats bothering me.

Should be interesti ng when they are both out and hope they both scale well.

With dual GF110 GPUs comes a big memory buffer. GeForce GTX 590 gets 3072 MB graphics memory work with and with dual 384-bit memory buses bandwith shouldn't be a problem.

3072 MB? Its still 1536 MB per GPU. Its not shared.. still works the same way how SLi works

that card never made it, the dual 580 pictured shows 2x8pin for a max draw of 375w from 2-8pins and the pcix slot.

considering the power draw of 580 sli 390 average, 444 peak i'd say that's plenty doable.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_580_SLI/23.html

shoot I run gtx480 sli and the power consuption is 431 average, 471 peak according to w1z's review.

And that's just the cards ( peaks 444w according to that review ) so you should add about 150w to that.

You tried it with the limiter yet ?. Although it be pushing your PSU over the 1/2 way mark.

And card is a custom design by ASUS, not nVidia. So you comment about nVidia throwing sanity out the window should be directed at ASUS.:D

And that is his point, he is already using a solution that consumes more power and provides less perfermance. People like him are who this card is for, not people that are concerned and won't buy any card that uses more than 250w, even if it really is two cards in one...

3072 MB? Its still 1536 MB per GPU. Its not shared.. still works the same way how SLi works

That is true, though nVidia always has the option to up the memory amount to 3GB per GPU, giving 3GB to work with on this card.

Well said Newtekie - you beat me to it. Folks getting all uppity over PCB's of other cards than the 580. I noticed the Asus on the bottom left of that pcb and the blurry gpu shots of a non 580 board..

Tsk tsk.

People thought Nvidia couldn't make a realistic 512 core card... Not only did they do it, they managed to pull the wool over AMD's eyes while they took their time releasing the 69xx series (forcing me to buy a 580 i might add...)

And remember, a dual 6970 board is also just as silly. 580 consumes 30-40 watts more on average than a 6970. Not that big a diff. My farts generate more heat and power than that.

well while nvidia has thrown sanity out the window... why not make a driver for 8way sli while they're at it. (4 of the 590s)

i wonder if they've done a die shrink secretly? doubt it...

I think an 8pin can do 150w (edit: yep... i was right.) so that's 450 via 3 pci-e 8pin plus 75w on the slot... a total capable power of 525w available to the card... that's about 44A! you'd need a 1300watt psu to do sli with these (quad)

... or THIS

6-pin PCIe connectors also give a max of 150Watt... The two added wires on an 8-pin are black ones, thus grounding wires...

listings say 95w doesn't matter what they "can supply" they are rated lower

Not a good assumption to make. The 6-pin connector is rated for 75w. Yes, a lot can go way beyond that, especially on good PSUs that have 8-pins. However, cheaper/weaker PSUs will pop if you start pulling that kind of wattage through the 6-pin connector. Also, on a 6-pin connector there are only 2 12v+ wires required, though often times 3 are used, while on an 8-pin 3 are required. Adding the extra two pins wasn't done to allow extra power dilivery, it was done as a way to diferientiate between a connector that might be able to supply 150w, and a connector that definitely can.:toast:

Meh, neither of these dual GPU cards are going to be worth the price. I suppose when some new games come out that require this kind of power, but right now there's nothing. I'll gladly wait until the end of the year.

Yup. Exactly.

honestly the only card i can see myself getting right now would be the GTX570 even if its not worth it since i have a 470. but the 570 is cooler, more efficient, and quieter so thats a win already right there

EDIT: or 6950

After $300-350 the law of diminising returns really starts to kick graphics cards in the face!:slap:

Just look at the GTX570 vs GTX580. The GTX580 is only 10-15% better at best than the GTX570, yet is priced nearly 100% more.
