My only question is, if they are going to now name the flagship 990, and using the mid-range GM204 silicone, when will we be seeing the GM210 high-end chip? As a "special" model, akin to the 780Ti, 6 months after this 980, or waiting until the 20nm reduction comes and in the next lineup?

I see this name change as simply a means to boost sales. The average GPU buyer is not a TPU member, does no research, listens to hype, and they truly will think they are getting MASSIVE upgrades from current gen GPU's.

I think they did that with the GTX660Ti, but sadly stock was short lived.

Here's the plan for NVidia:

2014 - GK204 release 880/870 on 28nm
2015 - GM210 release Titan xyz/Titan on 28nm, rebadge GK204 as 980/970 but on 20nm.

I totally called this. With the 880m already being a mobile gpu it didn't make sense to brand the new part the same. It's one thing if the desktop part is out to have the mobile line mirror. It's another to launch a new series and then have it mirror an older platform mobile solution in name scheme.
