had a go at overclocking a 6840 the other day, has to be said impressed me more than my own 6970.

The one i had could do 1000core @ 1.225 volts.

Most of been some bottleneck in the card somewhere as after overclocking fps went up 130 percent in unigine heaven from 10fps at the first scene to 23.

Not bad! Lol

6840??

Well apparel all the charts were wrong. The 6990 is codenamed "careless"!

at today's AMD APU processor platform release, AMD "careless" is the latest and most powerful (claims) of single card duo display adapter-HD6990 out "keep thinking about" (show off), and according to the news, HD6990 King of this card is expected to be generally available in the first quarter, but for now the entity under the cards has been exposed, I believe that soon you will see its shadow. Where's the fan on that card? :O

If it's under the small part covered by his hand, then that looks like a very tiny fan for a dual GPU card...

Edit: besides the 3870x2 had the fan in the end of the card and so did the 4870x2 and the 5970...

Only watched the first one, but seeing as how radial blower fans still draw air in from the top, that first one would not work.

It would jush push air away from it's self in both directions it can  ( obviously useless for cooling)

Yeah! watch the second video you'll see...
I think that would cool lot better since it in a seal chamber...

Fans pulling air for the most part is a lot less effciant than blowing air.

It's why you don't see heatsinks like the ones in these videos.

RE: The leaked 6990 specs'

Will it be using 2x6970 gpus?

Is that 3840 stream processors?

2x 6970 would be 3072 processors.

Unless the 6970 actually has 384 unused sharers under the bonnet to unlock.

If so, this could this out bench any new nvidia dual.

If 6970 had shaders to unlock, they would have showed up when people started unlocking 6950's since they are the same core. That leaves the possibility that 6990 is not going to be merely two Caymans on a single card. It may very well have unique cores of it's own. It could also mean that if 6950 and 6970 have the extra shaders, that they are laser cut and not unlockable or else someone would have found them and unlocked them already. AMD may be saving those shaders for the 7000 series cards when they release on 28nm to get an extra speed boost like nVidia did when they laser cut the shaders on the original Fermis and then unlocked them in the redesign. Activating those shaders now might push the cards beyond acceptable power consumption and thermal limits which I suspect was the case with the original Fermi's already running hot and drawing a lot of power those additional shaders would have made things even worse. 6990 is probably going to have an extravagantly expensive cooler that blows more hot air than a politician even in the reference designs so they could get away with releasing it with more shaders. There's probably more to the cooler shown in the photo than we are seeing or else that is not the cooler it will release with.

you've made one assumption there, that you may not realise you made:

people dont just go "ZOMG, we can unlock the shaders!" they have near identical cards in the first place, and copy-paste the BIOS (or sections of it) to the 'unlockable' card

In this case, we may actually find out that the 6970 CAN unlock more shaders -as well as the 6950 having a chance at doing so.

We have BIOS modding tools available now. We don't have to wait for the 6990 BIOS to release to find out if there are additional shaders present in the 6950/6970 cores other than the ones we already know about. Someone can just use the modding tools to try to find them. Besides, it is doubtful that doing a straight flash of the 6990 BIOS to a 6970 or 6950 is going to work because it will be looking for two cores and the voltages will probably be different because the card will need more power than a single GPU card.

true, but its usually by comparing two similar products that the inital discoveries come from.

No! i think it's a new design the fan will be in front of the card & hidden inside the HS... maybe?

it was covered in another thread, they suck air in from the rear now, not the side.

should help a lot in crossfire.

I haven't really kept up on this gen of cards, but seeing talk of a 6990 has me thinking. It seems no one knows what the exact plan is for the 6990, but I would hope each GPU on it is above and beyond the 6970. I honestly was really hoping the 6970 was a bit more powerful myself. But if the dual GPU card had 2 gpu's better than the best single gpu card they got, that would be a very large gap.

i think with today CF performance, even if the core are just HD 6950, the gap will be wide it will even wider on eyefinity config
