OMG...HD6950 too slow?

Thanks everyone for your infos.

I did re-install the OS. Maybe there's a conflict between the processor and the VGA here.
I'll go for a aftermarket cooler than try to o/c the 920 then. It seems nothing else is possible to do here.

Should I return this VGA and grab a GTX570? Considering my 6950 is flashed with 6970 bios now.

I'm telling you try another slot if you have one. I am not guaranteeing that will fix it but I have had it happen too me. I wouldn't return the card they are about as powerful as each other and if your CPU is bottlenecking your GPU now then it would do the same to the GTX 570.

what if the same thing happens even then? you better first check what the bottleneck is. i doubt it is the video card.

I think you should RMA the card. There is no reason for it to run that slow. Overclocked 920 or not. You should be seeing significant gains with that upgrade. If you still have your 275, plug it in, and send that card back.

That is if nothing is wrong with your mobo.

What were you scoring with your 275 in 3dmark?

RMA = return it to vendor and get a new one. Return Merchandise Authorization...just means send it back. Because if everything is the same in your system except for the card, then something is wrong with the card. especially if you reinstalled windows and loaded latest ati driver.

I brought a XFX HD6870 first. It was the same. Some people said it was really crap and i should go for a HD6950 and i did changed it for this one. I cannot get a re-fund but change the card again. I don't think theres a problem with the VGA here.

I agree, it's not a VGA problem.

-Make sure the PCI-E lanes are at x16
-Turn off PCI-E Link state power management in Windows
-Overclock your CPU just a little bit (100-300mhz) to see if there is any change. It should be perfectly safe with stock voltage and a stock cooler.

Yes.

And this is the 3DMark 11 Score:

P4618 3DMarks

To all saying it is a driver/vga problem, and he should grab an Nvidia, etc....he states he is scoring P4618 in 3DMark11, which is right where it should be. There is some other confict going on...this is NOT a VGA issue in my opinion.

Edit: Glad to hear this worked out. That is a beast of a card...you should definately see improvements...(I would still get a cooler and OC that CPU though.) :D

May there be a problem with rams? When I first purchased the parts and installed the rams it took years for me to make it run at 6GB , which they were running at 1066 MHz.. It wasn't detecting more than 4GB but with some help i managed to run @ 6GB - 1866 MHz.

that sounds about right for the 3dmark score. what resolution are you gaming at??

maybe overclock your 920 to 3.4 3.6ghz will help. assuming you have an after market cooler

But since applications are being slow and stuff in windows it might be a driver problem and ati drivers have been crappy for a lot of people lately

that is like the stupidest suggest i have ever read, i know you are trying to help, but sorry. i just coudn't help it.

@ OP - Check Afterburner clock readings during a game, and make sure your power connectors are connected.

One more note - check Powertune settings

Agreed +1 Above

To the people earlier who said that a i7 920 does not need to be overclocked or that it is not worth it is wrong IMO. I am running a i7 860 basically the same CPU small differences but fairly close.

Overclocking my CPU did make a difference with me and Just one of my 6950's. Sure it made a bigger difference with two but it still does make a big difference! It is big enough to warrant the overclock! Talking a few thousand points in vantage and not just the CPU score either. So a few thousand points in vantage translates out to some decent performance in FPS

Where do I do this?

It's under Power Options in the Control Panel. Whatever "plan" you're using, tick "Change plan settings" next to it. It will be in there.

Though, it does sound like swapping slots fixed something. What does GPU-Z say your lanes are running at? Can you post a screenshot?
