Dear All.

I'm thinking of upgrading from my Sparkle GTX 650 Ti 1GB GPU. In your opinion is the msi 760 worth the £60 premium over the Palit 750 Ti?

I have a Xigmatek X-Calibre 600W PSU (not the best I know but surely not the worst either) so power shouldn't be a problem. Would the superior performance on the 760 be noticeable? The Palit seems most impressive due to the low power draw and for that reason I'm drawn to it. It seems to be the fastest 750 Ti available. But then I figure if I'm upgrading I should get as much performance as possible and pay a bit more.

I know they're different classes of GPU (£106 vs £169).

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Palit/GTX_750_Ti_StormX_Dual/

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GeForce_GTX_760_TF_Gaming/

Many thanks in advance.

What about an R9 270X? Overall it performs about in the middle of GTX 750Ti and GTX 760 and costs not much more than a 750Ti (at least here in Australia anyway, generally about an extra 10-20% of a 750Ti price depending on the model).

Going from a 650Ti I wouldn't really recommend a 750Ti, there isn't a big enough performance difference to warrant spending that much money on an upgrade in my opinion.

If you are only looking at the 750Ti and 760 then I'd go for a 760.

Thanks. Power, noise and heat are important to me. Which is why I haven't included the AMD cards. From what I have read, they're also older cards rebranded.

I appreciate you taking time to reply.

So using the MSI R9 270x TF as an example, because both it and the MSI GTX 760 have the same cooler, they both have the same good acoustic performance (and is very quiet from my own experience). On the power consumption front, on average the R9 270x consumes 122W compared to 141W for the GTX 760. And temperatures, once again the MSI R9 270x wins and is cooler than the MSI GTX 760.

So basically, the MSI R9 270x TF is the same if not better than the GTX 760 in all of those things you mentioned.

yes I'm well aware they are rebrands but there is nothing wrong with that in my books assuming the price is low, which in this case it most definitely is compared to the competition. The R9 280X is another stellar rebrand, price/performance is just out of this world especially as the GTX 770 (competition) is also a rebrand but costs much more (where I live) for similar performance. The only thing I'd have against rebrands is that overclockablility might be a little weak because of being tweaked already to get the most out of the older tech. And yeh everything Layton said, I agree completely :toast:

You're right. I must have read the review for either the reference card or a different brand. That said I have read this from the TPU forum....

http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/msi-r9-270x-gaming-2048-mb.195886/

"My last card, with afterburner you can actually overvolt and get it up to around 1300 clock,
However, I changed to a GTX 760 and although more of a sidegrade as far as numbers go. Overall the gaming experience has improved a hell of a lot. Reason being? AMD drivers......with the R9 270x it would have weird issues with some games, random stutters in some lesser known titles. The original Assassins creed for example would dip below 60 alot. With the 760 its pegged above 80 at all times. Left 4 Dead would stutter at the start of the game and then settle down, with the 760, not one stutter in sight at all times. World Of Warcraft displayed tiny stutters when flying and in intensive shadowy areas, with the 760 it's all smooth as a fresh egg nog slipping down your throat.
As always, impressive numbers don't tell the big picture.
Overall the GTX 760 has impressed me 200% over the R9 270x purely because of game support and drivers. YMMV"

I'm obviously no expert, so I can only go by the advice of people such as yourselves.

Also the Crysis 3, Battlefield 3 and Worl of warcraft FPS lag behind on the R9 270X. Not that I play these games. I play World of Tanks (mostly), Fifa and half Life 2 and Arkham Origins.

I'd agree that AMD had worse drivers if we were discussing this 5-10 years ago but things are different now from what I've tried out. My observations have been that Nvidia drivers have been continually degrading in quality for about the last year and a half. I think the last bulletproof one I've tried was 314.22 but that was with a different graphics card so I can't really compare. AMD have been continually upgrading in quality. They've been good to me for a while now. The only issue I had was when I ran 2 R9 280Xs in crossfire I had terrible stutter in Titanfall but that was fixed in a few weeks after the game's release. This sort of thing can happen for new game releases and it is even more likely to occur when you combine that with a multi-gpu setup.

I'd put driver stability on level terms from the green and red camps at this juncture.

And the Guru3D.com review states:

"Competition wise, realistically though it is not able to compete with say a GeForce GTX 760. Then again the GTX 760 is a few tenners more expensive".

That's basically it. They both (R9 270x & GTX 760) seem to have a similar 'performance per dollar', and as well as performance scaling with price, you also have higher thermals and higher power consumption with the GTX 760. Both are great cards, but I can say from experience that the R9 270x is a great choice and also less expensive.

Cheers Layton. Its seems I've got an affiliation with Nvidia going on and not really sure why.
Maybe because I already have a GTX 650 Ti which works fine. I also like Geforce Experience.

If you prefer Team Green, then by all means go for the GTX 760. I personally don't sit in either camps - I prefer to evaluate what card is most suitable for a budget a person has and most suitable for the usage of the machine. For a 1080p resolution, expect to play at high settings with a GTX 750 Ti, and max settings with a GTX 760.

It depends, power consumption differences especially in this range of cards your looking at are not going to be a problem and noise is not going to be a problem as it comes down to the brand and cooler you choose. Any card can be loud regardless of brand, it comes down to the cooler more times than not because the difference in heat production and power consumptions are normally close enough that the difference is very small. Sometimes people quote more based on reference coolers which are normally not very good to begin with as is so it does not matter.

For the same money as the GTX 760, you can grab this card the MSI Gaming R9 280 which will provide higher performance of all the cards mentioned and you will not have problems with heat/noise because of the gaming cooler that is present on all brands. The Power Consumption difference is also not much so it really will be the best band you can grab!

The prices right now of an R9 280 and a GTX 760 on Amazon UK (Just using that as a basis)

MSI Gaming GTX 760 = £169.99
MSI Gaming R9 280 = £169.73

The 280 is going to deliver the best price to performance ratio for your needs.

But where do I stop? This is typical of what I do. I've got a 650Ti and up until a few days ago was upgrading to a Palit 750 Ti StormX Dual. All of a sudden its a 760 and now an R9 280!!? I only really play World of Tanks at the moment.

well the 280 is almost the same price even cheaper in some cases and it's also a bit faster. If you are considering the 760, might as well take a look at the 280.

I would always try and buy the most powerful card I can afford to make the most of an upgrade. Depending on how much you have budgeted for this upgrade will determine where you should stop.

Well depends on what you want in the end. I only suggest the 280 because it is more powerful than the 760 and costs the same.

It comes down to how long you want the GPU to last in terms of performance and what you want to spend. My opinion is that buying a 750ti would not be a big upgrade from a 650ti except by a small margin which is not worthy of an upgrade at the moment. If all you play is world of tanks right now and your not getting the FPS you want, I would highly suggest at least grabbing a 280 because you would get much better overall upgrade and it will last a bit longer in gaming in the long run.

It is better to invest in a higher GPU if you can for the long run because you can keep it longer and keep getting some performance for a good long time. The lower you go, the less time the GPU will perform in games in the long run.

I would say either get the R9 280 (Or if you really want to stick with Nvidia 760, but I would get the better performer which is the 280) and then hold onto it for awhile.

There are lots in the red camp. Any greens?
go check your pricing in your own country and make your decision for me a gtx 760 4GB is only 15$ more than the R9280 in my country and as for the performance the R9280 is only faster if its an amd title in generic titles its the same fps or worse !
You can go and check of you don't believe me

Since you love NVIDIA i would rather suggest you stick with them especially since NVIDIA shadow play is alot better than AMD's own version

NVIDIA 30min of recording
amd 10 min of recording!

go check your pricing in your own country and make your decision for me a gtx 760 4GB is only 15$ more than the R9280 in my country and as for the performance the R9280 is only faster if its an amd title in generic titles its the same fps or worse !
You can go and check of you don't believe me

Since you love NVIDIA i would rather suggest you stick with them especially since NVIDIA shadow play is alot better than AMD's own version

NVIDIA 30min of recording
amd 10 min of recording!
That is not correct, the R9 280 is well known to be faster than the 760 in most titles AMD titled or not. The R9 280 is a rebranded HD 7950 which was in competition last round the the GTX 670 which no longer exists for normal users except in the realm of OEM (GTX 760ti). The 760 is lower than the 670 and even trades blows with the R9 270X in terms of performance.

ShadowPlay is not the end all decision on a card either especially if we are talking about getting the most bang for buck in performance at the areas we are looking at.

A 4gb GTX 760 is also a waste, its GPU performance would not utilize the extra 2gb of VRAM except in a few cases that involve 2 of them (SLI). 2-3gb is good enough in the realms of gaming for 1080p.

The R9 280 draws too much power.
Appreciate all the comments though.

Metro Last Light (Nvidia Title)
Total War Rome 2
Watch Dogs (Nvidia Title)

Of that entire review, not one game listed (AMD or Nvidia titled) did the 760 come out ahead. I also have linked more than 4 different sites and reviews...

? How much is to much on power consumption for you and what is holding you back? The R9 280 pull about 10-15 watt difference on average (depending on where you look) so I am confused?

Could you explain what is holding you back because you have plenty of power from your PSU? I just would like to understand so we can all give you better suggestions based on that because I am just a little confused what you consider to be to much.

Difficult to look at the moment as using phone to view posts.
Think I need to do more reading about pros and cons of Nvidia/AMD.
I like Nvidia Experience, but I don't need shadow play. I don't want driver issues. I also want to stay well within my PSU capabilities. I want very low temps and very low noise. I also want a card that will play all games well regardless of who they are tuned for. And I don't want to spend over £170. I also want decent build quality.
