Squeeze some out and see if the paste is separated. If it still looks normal use it.

AC MX4 works great and is usually very affordable. I also like Noctua's stuff as well...probably same crap with different label.

Can confirm - I have used BOTH these TIMS and my entire system is currently using PK-3. For everyone else i build for - MX-4 is most cost effective while providing the most performance

It's probably ok, like the others have said. However, this stuff doesn't cost very much so it's not a bad idea if you just buy another tube of it for peace of mind and chuck this old one. It's what I would do.

Exactly, it is more about how the TIM is stored and if it holds its consistency. I have yet to see any sort of expiration date on any of the tubes I have seen.

Issue is all comp shops are closed so Ima try the AS5 and see how it does. Still looks good.

How to clean CPU w/o alcohol? It's all dry paste on it.

Doesn't matter much how you get the bulk of it (paper towel + water) off but isopropanol + coffee filter is your best option before applying fresh thermal paste.

Do you have hand sanitizer (contains alcohol), baking soda (mild abrasive), and/or an old toothbrush?

A combination of any of those items followed by a good cleaning with water should work in a pinch ;)

Thing is that some pastes have a waxy base that is now on that chip of yours, and will act as a slight insulator. Toss on your AS5 now, but you'll want to get some alcohol, or better yet, some Artic Clean, to get the chip to it's true cooling potential.

There is a significant difference between plain old alcohol and Artic Clean. I won't use just alcohol any more.. it's simply not good enough for a proper cleaning. I have literal gallons of isopropyl that I use to dunk stuff into for cleaning, but I won't use just isopropyl on my CPUs. The coffee filter idea is good, too, because its rough, absorbent, and usually lint-free.

alcohol has worked much better than arctic clean for me, when I have used arctic clean before as directed I have had it leave some residue which I removed with ispropyl anyway, takes fewer steps just to use the isopropyl in the first place.

So i tossed everything back together per Dave's advice. When i get two new case fans (or that h100 someone is selling if its worth it) I'll properly clean this thing. Pics in a moment

Part2 is isopropyl-based. Part one is a citric acid-based, which breaks up the wax. Also works great on those pink bubble-gum pastes. Citric Acid is used as a food-safe cleaner for ages (especially great for cleaning coffee machines). :p

It can leave some residue for sure, but if it does, you're simply supposed to put a couple more drops of Part 2 on, and you need to wipe it before it dries.

So it boots, sits there, shuts off, boots again, sits there, shuts off. So done with this thing. :banghead:

EDIT: It booted, only had to damage and fix a DVI cable in the process. 80c on prime95 stock. Not bad considering I took out two fans with gunky paste.

Pretty sure Arctic Clean 1 is basically Goo Gone (citrus oil basically) and Arctic Clean 2 is 100% isopropanol alcohol (where "rubbing alcohol" is something like 85% isopropanol alcohol). You don't want to dump something like Goo Gone on a processor/heatsink if you don't have isopropanol to clean it off. That residual oil will be really bad for thermal transmission.

Also, if you use water to cleanse the surface before applying thermal paste, I'd highly recommend distilled water so there is no residue.
