Hey guys,

I'm building a new pc and my old gaming rig had a GTX980 in it. I pulled that card to go into my new build.

I then put in my 280x in my old gaming rig and the pc turns on but the card does not send a signal. Fans spin, pc is running, no beeps or anything to indicate an issue.

I tried the 280x in an old pc when i first got it and it fired right up no problem. I put my 980 back in the the pc boots. Put the 280x in and black screen.

Tried the 280x with both DVI and HDMI. The only thing I have not done is tried resetting the BIOS. I know it is not a power issue because this pc has a 850 watt corsair psu and that same PSU powered the card up the other day in my old test rig.

The BIOS is up to date for the mobo. And again my 980 works fine with it.

One other thing I did not do was uninstall the nvidia drivers but I have never seen a PC not post due to drivers in the OS. So I think it must be something else.

Any ideas?

/edit... I'd like to add that back before i bought the 980 I bought a 290x and had the very same issue. I thought the card was faulty and returned it, then bought the GTX970, then sold that and bought the GTX 980.

So maybe this is a BIOS issue after all?

Hey !
I know if I put an old bios in my mobo, my GTX 970 gives me the same issue that you get with your 280X.
I remember the MSI 290X I bought had 2 bios, 1 was legacy for better compatibility with older mobo, do you have this on your 280X ?

For me it seems like it's a mobo bios issue yes.
Last beta bios for your mobo is from november 2013 ( https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=164135.0 )
Maybe give it a try. You have to register and log in there to be able to see and download the attached files.

running a UEFI board? try disabling fast boot and UEFI stuff, i cant recall the exact names but some older cards had issues with UEFI support.

Ain't it just running on the integrated intel then?

@Ferrum Master No this computer does not have integrated graphics. You might be thinking of my new build which has the skylake cpu. This thread is about the pc in my system specs list which is replacing my aging htpc.

When I have a moment I plan to dive into the BIOS settings and if it comes to it I will reset the BIOS.

Right now I tossed in an old nvidia card I had laying around so I can now at least boot the pc.

I agree that the BIOS is most likely the issue but the mobo is fully updated with the latest BIOS. It is older but my GTX 980 fires up no problems and that card is newer than the 280x.

So if you already have the the last one which is E7681.443 BETA from november 2013, did you try with the official 4.3 from MSI which is 7681v43 from january 2013 ?

@c2DDragon You know what? I'm not sure which one I have. I will look later. I think I have the latest non beta bios. I don't recall ever downloading a beta BIOS.

Is the 280X "UEFI Ready?" UEFI BIOS + non-UEFI card = black screen. My motherboard gives a Phoenix video-issue beep code too.

Video cards seem to be a minefield in terms of UEFI support. PowerColor puts "UEFI Ready" on to the top right of the card's retail packaging.

You sure? My board uses UEFI, is running in UEFI mode, yet my GTX660 Ti has no UEFI rom and it runs fine. The only caveat in my situation is I can't use UEFI fast boot.

I tried to run a 5670 card in my system as primary and the described black screen + video beep codes occurred. UEFI fast boot was disabled. The same 5670 card works perfectly fine in another computer or as a secondary card in the same computer. The motherboard (MSI Z170A Gaming 7) simply can't boot with it. Come to think of it, when browsing the BIOS, the monitor connected to the 5670 never comes on. It turns on upon reaching the desktop.

I have seen the same behaviour which is why i made my somewhat vague comment earlier - UEFI can make things a little weird, where you wont get an image til the OS has booted. I've only seen it on someone elses machine so i'm not 100% sure of the cause or fix, but the video card was not faulty.

It is 6th chipset. It is kind of a proto uefi. More like efi + plain ami. Buggy as hell for many makers.

Actually if you would take VBE7 and mod the gpu bios. Then the UEFI bios will be disabled for sure in the GPU. I guess it will boot also then. You could try it as a last resort. Take video bios dump using GPU-Z. Save it, then edit it a bit... for example a better fan curve. And atiflash -p 0 rom.bin :)

@WhiteNoise When I first installed my 280X into my first build 2 years ago, it took a craptastic amount of time for it to snap out of a black screen. It took the greater half of an entire day for the 280X to begin outputting video. This was on Win 8.1, and I had gone thru DDU to remove my prior Geforce drivers for an old card. The card has worked fine until this day, just that initial hiccup.

I wouldn't discount the possibility of the card simply being old and without proper support for UEFI. That's what happened to my R7 265 and H97N-WIFI. The board works great with my new EVGA GTX 750 Ti (which has a whole leaflet in the box dedicated to telling the user about its UEFI compatibility), but the R7 265 would cause a heck of a lot of problems before booting properly on the 10th try, each time. My R9 280X had none of these problems on a Z97MX Gaming 5, but then again, I'm pretty sure that card was marketed as UEFI-compatible while the Club3D made no mention of UEFI for the R7 265.

@c2DDragon

You my friend are awesome. I tried everything I could to get this resolved. I had never heard of this beta BIOS as I always assumed my BIOS was current; and it was according to MSI. But I downloaded the beta BIOS you linked to and flashed my board. Tossed in the 280X and BAM it booted right up!!

You my friend saved me even more time messing with this and money. I would have purchased a new board from Newegg.

So if you have a steam account, PM me your steam name so I can friend you and provide a gift. Nothing would make me happier than buying you a game to enjoy. Seriously dude...your help is appreciated.
