Robert Matthews may have just become our best new ear bud.

The physicist’s recent work out of Aston University in Birmingham, England, wasn’t concerned with tracing the origins of the Big Bang, but instead tackling the more immediate problem of tangled headphone cords.

According to the Daily Mail, Matthews investigated “Murphy’s Law of String” to explain a phenomenon that frustrates headphone wearers everywhere. And, astonishingly, the physicist claims he’s devised a workable fix, potentially eliminating tangled headphone wires as we know them.

After some experimentation, Matthews and students had the idea to pin the headphone cords together in two spots: the three wires all together near the audio jack and two earbuds, and the two earbud cables again farther down the cable (see the image below).

“Simply clipping together the two ends of the cords makes the cable less likely to form a knot, saving the frustration of having to untangle it before plugging in,” Matthews said of the group’s findings.

I'll sell a pair of paperclips to headphone users for half the price of apple branded ones, and still turn a 1000% profit.

Isn't the Daily Mail the English equivalent of the USA's the ONION?

From what I've seen people living in the UK posting about the Daily Mail, it's not taken seriously.

From what I've seen people living in the UK posting about the Daily Mail, it's not taken seriously.

The Daily Mail basically supported Hitler during the war, only the exceedingly old style war-types and general racist rich businessmen read the Daily Mail. So no, don't take it seriously, or as a representation of what the rest of Britain thinks.

Here is a link to a website that lists everything the Daily Mail has ever published on what they think causes cancer. The list is laughable, and quite frankly embarassing.

The real crime is the Daily Mail actually reports these things as serious, non-humorous journalism. They take themselves quite seriously.

Because I trust the second hand reporting of Yahoo, of a Daily Mail article.

They chose buzz words to get online hits. Science is sexy, and people recognize string theory whenever they hear it. It doesn't matter that this has nothing to do with strings, there's a physicist vaguely related to the thing and you can stretch the definition of an electrical conductor into a string. Physicist+String+Solution=web hits.

Seriously though, thanks RCoon. I was unaware of that listing, and the articles are pretty priceless. Maybe we can submit some articles that "prove" irresponsible journalism causes cancer. Given the contradictory information they've already internalized, maybe we can finally make the editors brains self-destruct.
