Playstation 2 outselling Playstation 3

Mired in an overall slump, the once recession-proof video game industry is finally experiencing some adverse effects from the troubled economy.

Just ask Sony. The games giant saw losses pretty much across the board in the year's first quarter, as sales of its flagship Playstation 3 system fell from last year's 1.6 million to only 1.1 million. Its PSP handheld saw a huge drop, too, from 3.7 million to only 1.2 million.

The one bright spot? The nine year-old Playstation 2, which managed to outsell the PS3 by roughly 500,000 units despite being older than some of its fans.

Part of the system's continued success can be attributed to the ailing economy. At only $99, it's a significantly cheaper alternative to the entry-level Xbox 360 ($199) and Nintendo Wii ($250), not to mention the still inordinately pricey Playstation 3 ($399). Adding bang to the buck is the system's massive library of highly-rated, value-priced games, which includes seminal titles from huge franchises like Grand Theft Auto, God of War and Final Fantasy. The PS2 also boasts the ability to play DVDs, which, despite Sony's efforts to promote its hi-def Blu-Ray technology, remains the industry's leading format (though video game sales outperformed both in 2008).

Unfortunately, software sales for all three Sony systems took a serious tumble, with PS3 games suffering a decline from 22.8 million last year to 14.8 million this year. However, the company has also noted that they've managed to reduce the production costs of the console by about 70%. Could consumers soon reap the benefits of those savings in the form of a long-awaited PS3 price cut?

It wouldn't suprise me if a lot of them were being used for PS1 games to replace dead or dying PS1s, plus hey, it's a PS2... My PS1 gave up the ghost about a month ago.

It's $300 less and there are a TON of games available so yeah these are proally selling like hot cakes. You can give one for a B-Day present w/Guitar Hero for under $200 and thats a killer deal!

Well, its cheaper and its a great way to get some great games with this crappy economy.

Doesn't prove the PS3 sucks or anything, just people trying to get a decent gaming experience in tough times.

It's not really sad IMO, it's just that they're not putting any effort into it and are only releasing crappy ports of movie games or other stuff. It's a good console, I mean for less than $100 you can get one like new with a few games and controllers. I bought a 7" clip-on screen for mine before I sold it and loved it, great for trips.

The PS2 has been a competitive seller after the new consoles since they came out. I even think the PS2 has been outselling the PS3 month for month since release, or at least most of the time. And I think it's outsold the 360 on numerous occasions.

Coupled with the PS3 sales, it's really been an amazing console and kept Sony afloat.

A lot of parents are like, i think ill buy a cheap PS2 to give to my kids seeing as games are like £10-£20 now. So they get em a PS2 and a few second hand games.

It has a huge library of games and i admit about 75% of them are shit but there are a lot of great titles that can be had for next to nothing.

You could buy one to add a hard drive and mod it since its relatively cheap to do so, a collector may want one to get cheap games. A person who never owned one can get one cheap these days too, im talking about people who owned xbox or gamecubes.

I even know people who own 2 PS2's and nearly everyone has or had a PS2.

I bet the main reason its selling tho is because its easy to pick up a PS2 and a few second hand games, in the second hand section you can get games for £5 even i saw Hitman for £1.

I can agree here. I just stocked up on a TON of old school PS2 games from Amazon for under $75.

The PS2 is still pretty good imo. As the source said, dirt cheap + a million games and some of them are AWESOME = win.

Sometimes I seroiusly think about bying one.
