please advise for a new build for simulation

Hi All,

I haven't build a PC for a long time. Currently, I need to build a machine for numerical simulation but I don't have an exact idea the components need. Here're some of the things I have in mind:

1. Intel i7-4790K
2. 16 or 32 GBytes RAM
3. Not sure on the motherboard...
4. I don't need a video card, nor a monitor
5. No OS is needed (I plan to run a ubuntu LTS)
6. 1 TB harddisk is good enough.
7. A stable power supply
8. I don't need a CD-ROM, (I plan to boot from usb to get the installation, )
9. Will need a computer case, but not a big computer case, don't plan to expand anything. But need to have enough ventalization, because this thing will be kept running in high loading. 24/7
10. If I need more computing power, I will just get an exact build

I'm thinking about intel i7-4790k because of its clock speed fast enough. Speed is more important than multi-cores, but don't plan to spend more $$, as probably it will be cheaper to get another exact build.

May you guys please suggest the components and parts need to build this?

If speed is more important than cores. Look at the unlocked Pentium G3258 dual core. You could save a bunch of $. Some overclock like crazy up to 4.8 GHz

Otherwise where do you shop for parts?

thanks jetser. I'm trying to avoid overclocking (to minimize time spent on tuning), just going to buy standard parts from newegg for example.

If you are running single threaded, get an i5 K chip instead. bump the multiplier up, shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes.

4690k or 4790k will both fit your needs. The difference is the amount of logical cores. They both have high stock/boost clocks and will be fine. The only thing you'll need on both is a better cooler like the Hyper 212 EVO.

I'd say any ASUS, MSI, or Gigabyte boards. Personally I like the one in my specs, all you need to do is update the BIOS for the 4790k and it'll run smoothly.

if you are serious about number crunching loads 24/7 then a XEON is the way to go

What king of simulations are you going to be running? Is it only single threaded since then even i3 or the pentium anniversary would be enough. The problem that I see with overclock is not the time it takes to tweak but the posibility that the results are being affected. Another option would be a xeon cpu as they are meant for 24/7 load

As long as you are careful not to overdo overclocking result integrity should be largely fine.
