Re: ATI Drivers

I am using the 10.4 drivers as well. 10.5 - 10.7 I has weird crossfire issues. Try the 10.4s and let us know.

+1 on the 10.4 Drivers. I had crossfire issues with the 10.7 drivers. Went back to 10.4 and no more problems.

When my laptop is idle it stays around 60-65 C but when I'm playing it goes up to 80 C. Is this normal for a mobility graphics card?

You guys are making me nervous :(

Idle could be lower, but load is pretty neat

Darn... that's not something I want to hear.

I found the 10.4 notebook drivers and installed it. I tried to play COD 4 again and saw the screen flash with the gray screen so I got scared and went back to my desktop. I saw the temp was 82 C. So I guess I'll have to send in my laptop to Asus for them to fix it or something.

Try underclocking the memory (as CDA suggested). See if that works. If not, sounds like RMA to me. :(

I don't know how to do that  But maybe my bf knows how. I'll see what I can do.

Reaching your left retina.
80º C is not much for current GPUs. They can take 90º C without an issue. You don't want them running that high for long periods of time but 80 is safe. They are speced out for as high as 105ºC...

I suggest you download Furmark or any other GPU stress test and see what the temps are, under full 100% load on Furmark they sould not be much higher than 90. Only if they are more than 90 and close to 100 under Furmark I would start worrying.

Sadly I don't know what the problem is, but I don't think it's related to temps, so don't worry for the time being. It sounds more like a driver problem, and as has been said this was a very common problem in the early days of HD5000 cards, but it was resolved with newer drivers. I know that you have tried many defferent drivers, so I'm just as lost as the rest. :(

You've already got a lot of people helping here, so I'm just gonna give my 2c real quick.

This sounds like a hardware issue to me. Since you just got the laptop, it's still under warranty. Just call Asus support and have them fix it.

The temps seem normal. It's in a laptop after all. No room for a huge heatsink and fan and compared to the cooling solution, those high end cards put out some power. 60C idle 80C load is what I would expect from something like that. If it were overheating, I think the temp would be ridiculous like 100C+, which is what I wouldn't expect. (That's a 40C delta)

But seriously, call Asus, do the online chat, whatever. This isn't your problem, so I wouldn't sweat it. Let them sort it out, but make sure they do.

I'm downloading the Unigine "Heaven" DX11 benchmark to see how that runs. I'll let you guys know.

Th benchmark worked like a charm. The temps got to 83 C but I didn't get a gray screen or anything and I just tried a game that always froze up on me and it seems to be working like a charm right now. I think the 10.4 drivers might have done the trick.. but I'll play some more later just to be sure everything is working fine.

OH this is good to hear . Yeah drivers are a finicky issue to get worked out but once you do then all is well .
I must confess I do not own a laptop so as for heat I would consider that high for me as mine idles around 45c and loaded 70c , and would not fit in a laptop . :shadedshu

No matter what else happens, stick with the 10.4 drivers. The 10.7 definitely had problems.

guys 80'C on a laptop GPU is pretty normal when your actually using it/playing games..you won't expect a laptop to idle at like 30-40 degrees like a desktop so the temp shes getting at idle is standard for a laptop cooling.

+1. I just checked my temp (I'm running g73) and it's idle at 66C.

if you have any more issues, RMA. I have yet to update a single driver and I have had zero issues. (borderlands, bad company, dirt 2, etc...)

good luck!
