@W1zzard I've noticed that we've got some new stationary ads in the margins which aren't blocked by the ad blocker - and I love them!

I confess that I do use the ad blocker on TPU, but that's only because I can't stand animated ads, regardless of their content. If you could move to stationary ads only, I wouldn't ad block any of them any more. In fact, I actually like looking at ads targeted at us enthusiasts, it's just that the animation is so incredibly distracting and annoying for me that I'm forced to block them.

Thanks, I really appreciate it. I just wish other sites of all types not just techie ones, were as clued-up with the ads as TPU.

I want to add that I think enthusiast ads on an enthusiast website like this one actually enhance the look and feel of it and make it more interesting rather than just being something to put up with.

qubit, what do you think about very slightly animated ads, that basically just go through some pages of info? using switches and fades, without movement

Unfortunately, any sort of animation tends to bug me - I'm just a pain in the ass like that.

However, if those switches and fades happened every 30-60 seconds* or so, I think that would be fine. A fade taking between 2 and 5 seconds say, I think would look best. I'd really have to see it to tell you properly though.

*It might actually be less distracting if that time were varied between ads too, otherwise the mind becomes very used to expecting movement at that set interval and it becomes even more distracting.

How about you set up a test page with a poll and let us all give you feedback on it? (I'll remember to turn off the ad blocker. )

Is there a way I can block just the ads in the side margins? The other ads I don't mind. I have ADP disabled for TPU, but these margin ads are just annoying. Ironically enabling ADP blocks only the ones I don't mind and leaves the ads on the sides.

From what I can tell I think I want to remove the following with I assume Greasemonkey but I have no idea how to do so. Could someone help me so I don't have to block all ads on TPU?

so .. CentOS 7.1 was released recently .. update time!

Let's do this on our server #3, so services are not affected .. tell it go into cluster standby mode .. 10 seconds later, boom! emails come in that server 2 (which I never touched) spontaneously rebooted JUST NOW, which means our redundancy is gone .. services are shutting down to prevent corruption .. UGH!

I'm sorry, I don't know these systems like you do so can't recommend anything specific. I'm just making a general observation that whatever you're running on is badly letting you down, so I think it would be wise to move to something else if you can.

No one needs this reliability headache, least of all, yourself.

Unfortunately there seem to exist no alternatives.. I do regret migrating to a clustered approach, but no way to turn back without major headaches ..

all servers are upgraded now, let's see if this helps with stability

We can have a looong discussion on that - virtualization (VMware) done right is not slow. It is all about the interfaces - for SAN and hosts minimum 10Gbits interfaces
We have been running virtualization on our production since 2005 (MS SQL / Oracle servers - the largest 430 GB and the smalest 10 GB) running as fast as on bare metal,
but maybe the Glusterfs and Docker requires something else that virtualization can not provide?

you are right... they do not come cheap. Alternative use 1GBit iscsi (is slow - but cheap) and yes there can still be bugs in the virtual OS system, but with duplicate systems and updating only one system at a time the chance of downtime is minimal. We have had one breakdown since 2005 and that was because a 10GBit fibre channel card was faulty
