According to Sophos, the most recent political elections have caused a large surge in spam from both Republicans and Democrats hoping to gain support. However, Sophos has stated in a press release that the recent political spam is not legally "spam advertising". This is due to the ability of US political parties to ignore anti-spam legislation such as the CAN-SPAM Act. Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, said in a press release: "Isn't it time for politicians to abide by the same kind of internet etiquette guidelines that we would expect?"
